how old is he?

i wouldnt put him down unless he was really in pain and didnt move..

maybe try researching a good dog food that would help with it

Does he still wag his tail. How do you know he is suffering to the point you need to put him down.

Can some type of meds work to help relieve it.

Is he in paint all the time.

I wouldn't put him down unless its really extreme.

He could hardly walk into the vet, not waging his tail and he's 7. They also want to spade him. I don't want to put him down but don't want him to be in pain suffering all the time either I'm gonna give him a while to see how he reacts to the meds just wanted to see what y'all's thoughts on this to help make a good and thought out decession!

I had to give my dog an arthritis pill that was mussel based(oyster/clams) and cut back on his weight...he was neutered and got real fat is when his arthritis started...Id look into canine arthritis meds before id put my dog down unless I knew he was suffering.

Bump that crush up aspirin in a syringe feel it with water and shake it until it dissolves and then squirt it down his throat

Rimadyle. It does great for dogs with arthritis. However it can lead to liver toxicity and some labs are already predisposed to this. So give it to him only when he needs it. Deramax is also a good drug. Adequin may also work too. Each dog is different as well as each situation. I would have blood work done prior to any long term medicine prescribe to him. These are all prescription drugs so your going to have to see a vet.

Coming from working in a vets office for a long time and having four legged family members as well. Sometimes it hard to put to rest a companion that has been a part of your life for so long. But sometimes is best to not let him suffer due to personal selfishness. When its time he'll let you know, you just have to listen him. It's hard I know, I got my first hunting beagles almost 15 years ago. I still have one from two original dogs. But it's getting close to that time and i dread the day....

Find a good veterinary orthopedic specialist or veterinary sports medicine/ rehab specialist to take him to. There are a lot of things to treat advanced arthritis with, anti-inflammatories, pain meds, rehab, laser therapy, intra-articular injections, Adequan, etc. Neutering will have no effect on the arthritis.

X2 on the Rimadyle . I've used it on dogs in the past and it worked wonders.

Thanks for all the positive feedback! He's been at the animal hospital since Friday, and scheduled for surgery tomorrow. Hopefully all this will help and he can live a half way normal life! Thanks for the links I have been trying to learn as much as possible on hip displasia!

I know this stuff helps for joint problems. Worked wonders on my friends 10 year old. Maybe not for arthritis but why not try?

Get a tub of JointMax powder and start administering it. You never know if you don't try.

My female had spinal inflammation and mild soreness (despite being OFA Good) Basically, like sciatica in humans. My ortho wanted to go in and do some pretty invasive surgery, but I wanted to try glucosamine and MSM first.
That was 10 years ago and she's become a GRHRCH/MH/500 point dog since then.
