I'm picking up my first lab that I will own. I have a question. Where do you keep the puppy inside outside? Any other advise would be much appreciate.

I kept mine inside in crate. Take the pup with you whenever you can. Socialization is important in the pups early stage of life.
When he/she is big enough to retrieve a bumper, keep it fun for the pup. Don't over do it with retrieves. Always keep the pup wanting more..!! Good luck!!!

I have 2 labs. Both of them are inside dogs and I crate trained both of them.

I currently have three black labs (including a 12 week old). I have kept them inside when I'm home and at night and outdoors in a kennel while away at work. Keeping them inside makes them bond with you so they'll want to please you. Being outdoors during the day gives them stimulation.

Crate training is where you keep them in a crate while they sleep in order to house break them. They naturally don't want to go to the bathroom where they sleep, BUT they are relying on you to take them out when they do need to go!!! They say if you take their age in months and add one, that's how many hours they have to go to the bathroom (so a 2 month old needs to go every three hours). Take them to the same door each time and then give them a commannd when they go. My current pup would go sit by the door when he had to go at 8 1/2 weeks old.

Mine have always been in the house as well, and go in their kennels at night and while I'm at work. The key to housebreaking is consistency, take the pup out every couple hours, after they wake up from a nap, etc. I start treat training from day 1, as soon as they know their name I start with the obedience training and fun retrieves, and introduce them to wing clip pigeons. It's amazing how well they learn at a young agar, their brains are like a sponge and they absorb everything. Keep training sessions short to 10 mins or less a couple times a day and stick with it. Try to follow a training program as well, lots of good options out there. Hillmans puppy DVD is a good start, and then transition into another program later like lardy or smartworks. Another one I really like for inexperienced trainers is Akins duck dog basics series, really easy and simple to follow and will get you a solid meat dog that just about anyone would be happy to hunt with. Be consistent with everything, labs learn quick and as long as you keep them happy, healthy, and entertained they'll do anything for you. My pups 6 months and I just got her through force fetching, painfully slow process but will be worth it. I'd say train the pup yourself too, I've thoroughly enjoyed it and there is no one to blame if it doesn't do what you want it to do. Buy water dog, good book and a quick read

If you want an easier time with crate training and those first few days home, take a towel with you when picking the pup up. Rub it all over his mom. Her scent on it (and placed in the crate) will make the transition easier. Your pup will be more likely to snuggle up and sleep instead of "yowling" because he is lonely. After a few days and especially if he starts to shred it....remove.

I guess I'll have to do it with a old shirt cuz I'm picking him up on the way home from out of town.

Take him with u places but do not let the pup on the ground or in contact with other dogs . till there 6 month parvo virus shot . You don't gotta do it just a good idea . The breeder I got my dog has had 3 people have pups die of parvo because they didn't listen. Good luck with your new pup , I got a 7 month old choc lab

The only dog he comes in contact wit is our other dog and she is up to date on shots. He's doing good. He can be playing wit something out side and I throw his dummy and when he hears it hit the ground he takes off after it and brings it to me.

Ur own dogs are fine, its other dogs u need to worry about
