Post new boykin pup
Well I recently purchased a new prodrive boat and now have my first future duck dog. I'm really excited about him, but he's just laying around right now and isnt very playful. I don't know if it is bcuz we just took him.away from his mom or what bcuz when we was there with him and the other pups he was all over the place playing. I just don't want a dog that isn't playful and is just shy acting. I hope its just bcuz he is depressed for leaving hos family. Any thoughts?

Mine whined for days. We kept him close by the bed. Taught the kennel training later. He was such a puss. Don't rush it bub, he or she will come around.

I hope so. I paid good money for him and don't need just another pet. I got him bcuz when we was there as soon as he was let out he came running up to me and set on my feet. I pet him for a lil while then he got up and ran around and played with his mom and sister. I just hope he really comes around. I've never had a pup of any sort that wasn't playful. The only thing he wants to do now is lay in my lap. When my wife opens the door he takes off running. It's like he's scared of everything.

Boykins have a completely diff attitude, temperament, style, everything abt them is different. I would say do as much research on the breed as u can. Pam kadlec has a book( retriever training for spaniels) I would suggest buying it. Great knowledge in it.

My Boykin was a complete puss when I got her at close to a year old, and wouldnt hardly retrieve at all. Maybe it was because she was shy coming home to a new owner or something, but now she is a maniac and a retrieving machine. Just give him some time like the others have said.

In August of last year she, when I threw a dummy for her, she would run the complete opposite direction, and try to get inside the house. Maybe some bad experiences with the previous owner and training sessions. But this was her in January this year.

Thanks for the inputs guys. Just scaring me that he is so timid. I've never seen it b4. He is doing a little better this am though. He hasn't pissed in the house yet so that's a plus. I just wished he would get up and b a pup and play.

Mine is spoiled rotten she thinks she is a human. As for as being out side no she would rather be inside. But when it comes time to hunt or retrieve she is all business. Don't worry about it it will come along

Yea from what I've read I've heard not to beat them that they r really sensitive. Any good books that could pount me in the right direction? I'm not wanting a field trial champion or anything just a best friend and a good duck dog. I will say this guy is weird. He acts completely different than any other pup I've ever had. He has gotten better today. He plays a little more. He's still scared shirtless of anything new or out the ordinary. He plays a lot better outside. I guess he was prolly never let into a home. I can't wait for him to get used to everything and come out of his shell.

Mine was 7 mos old when I got her. The night we got her home I had to ale her out the truck because she wouldn't get out. I set her on the ground where she stood without moving for about 20 mins until I picked her up and brought her inside. It took her awhile to adjust and theirs no doubt they're different than other breeds but I love mine and want another one

Well took the dog for his first walk on a leash. He actually did pretty good. He is beginning to open up a lil more. He actually went and got his toy a couple times today and brought it back to me. He is definitely hot natured.

I got Sadie when she was 7 mos old (late November 2012) took her awhile to come around. Even longer to get her to start retrieving. Didn't seem like she had alotta drive. Akafreshwaterkilla kept telling me she would come around. Went through everything on the leash and she would retrieve at home but if I took her anywhere she wouldn't pick up the dummy. Like she was too distracted. Well after force fetch then basic obedience on an e collar I took her to my buddies house today. She charged every bumper like she was on fire and transitioned right into water retrieves like it was nothing new. I gotta say thanks to aka for the help (and alot more help to come) and like everyone here said just be patient. One other thing, I can't say I'm really rough or beat my dog but aka can attest to this she's handled the pressure well. She seems to take it as well as the labs or at least close to it. So if its done right you can push em and get really good results out of them.

I had mine handle up on a little male dog from across the street this morning. My lab is in heat and he thinks he's in love. Lol. Well I come out side and he thinks he's gonna bow up to me. Funny thing is he has this little color with some medal plates kinking together you can here him coming from a mile away. Well after he bowed up I told Josie to get him lol all you heard in the dark was those little name tags taping together running as fast as he could but fast wasn't good enough. Funny thing she runs him till he crosses the shell road I between our houses and stops and stands guard lol. Good way to start my morning lol

Got the pup home last night. I was on leave visiting family in Georgia when I got him. Introduced him to the otehr dogs. He is doing GREAT!!! He like a ping pong ball. All over the place now. My really manly long hair dachsund male don't care for him much though. He is kind of a prick anyways. I am trying to teach him sit right now, but he cant be still long enough to do anything. It is like he is a different dog than I had the otherday. Now if I can just get him to let me teach him something...lol

Man, I just can't stress enough to take your time and NEVER I mean NEVER srike her .......period end of story.

Boykins are educated not trained.

They are like debutantes.......they will do whatever you ask of them as long as you treat them with respect and are proud of them.

Again, spaniels do NOT train like labs. They are not going to take pressure or threats just to make you feel better.
You need to show them what thier reward will be.......that could be food, (treats) bumpers, sitting on the seat of the truck.....anything.
