Re: Pick up two birds at once
My yellow female does it. She even gotten 3 at a time. I find nothing wrong with it but I'm sure the dog gurus will think its stupid and consider your dog and mine to be mutts.

Re: Pick up two birds at once
I sent him to get one but he kept swimming and grabbed the other one. He brought them back and I sent him to get the third bird. I'm guessing he grabbed them to cuz they were close to each other.

I would not complain one bit!!! He's a retriever not a show dog.

Re: Pick up two birds at once
Let your dog pick up doubles. They key in real hunting, as opposed to hunt tests, you want your dog in and out as fast as possible. Mine does it all the time and I let her. Less time in the cold water.

Re: Pick up two birds at once
Yea I don't do hunt test either. I was proud that he grabbed two birds. Hell I was proud that he grabbed as many as he did considering it was his first hunt.

Kinda he won't pick up the bumper on command but he will hold until you tell him to give.

Had a buddy with a big chessie that could hold two mallards at a time. I'm with the others, the more in one trip the better.

My chessie would do it before I retired him.. He brought back 4 one time, two in his mouth, and he was pushing the other two with his chest

Re: Pick up two birds at once
This isn't frowned on hunt test birds are far apart and if dog is good when it picks up bird blow whistle and dog returns I would let my dog pick up two while hunting it don't affect hunt test test dogs aren't any different just trained to listen and held to higher standard than some hunters are worried about

Re: Pick up two birds at once
My golden retriever did that last year with a mallard and a gadwall. Grabbed the mallard by the head and grabbed the gadwall by the ass.
