 New pup
Ive got a new yellow female lab pup that ive had for about a month now. Ive done basic commands with her, but havent had time to fool with her due to everything thats went on in the past couple of weeks... Im finally freed up and ready to start training her. What are some of the first steps I should take in training her? I have her sitting well, but thats really all Ive had time to work with her.. I plan on shooting a teal soon and putting the wing on a string for her to play chase after/play with.. Ill put pics on in a bit

 Re: New pup
everything builds on obedience, keep hammering on that. right now everything should be working on obedience and fun bumpers, the formal retriver training doesn't really start after they get their adult teeth and start to mature. I do basic obedience stuff every day in the yard with all my dogs regardless of age, they look forward to training time every day.

 Re: New pup
Jackie Mertens sound beginnings is an awesome DVD for raising pups. I bought my copy off amazon for like 5 bucks. I would highly recommend it, even if you have to pay full price for it.

 Re: New pup
Buy Bill Tarant's " hey pup, fetch it up" Best retriever training book out there IMHO Toss that teal for the pup all you can in a small area to keep her bringing it back to you. Enjoy it!

 Re: New pup
What are some ways of going about impoving a dog who wont go and get what you throw, and when she does, she only runs up to it, and then runs back without bringing it back?

 Re: New pup
Don't overdo retrieves. 2or 3 at a time is plenty. Use a ball to fire her up and get her chase instinct going

 Re: New pup
When u try to get her to retreive use a toy get her excited bout it let her bite at it put in in her face and then throw and do this on a small rope or in a hallway so she has to come back to u when she does don't immediately take it from her its her prize tell her good dog and pet her make it a big deal but let her hold it for a bit if you take it right away she will try to avoid coming back to u with it the hillman video is 130$ I strongly recommend u get it it will help u a lot and they sell for 100$ second hand and they don't last long on the retreiver forum just what ever u do don't put a lot of pressure on a puppy just keep her happy and it will come
