Post Drahthaar
I'm looking at getting a pup in spring (when i move out of the house i can't have a dog in) and the drahthaars have always intrigued me. I know there are a few guys on here that hunt them. Could you give me any insight? The dog will mostly be a duck retriever for me, but i may pheasant hunt a little, and would like to use it to track blood and/or shed hunting. Is it a hard breed to train? Any special training method? I am going to try to meet up with a local breeder on Sat after hunting. Thanks!

Talked to the breeder today, he will be testing on Saturday, but thinks he will be back on Sunday. I will go meet with him after i get out if the marsh if all goes well. I plan in putting my deposit down immediately if i am happy with his dogs. The litter should be ready right around my move time. Still any info from others would be appreciated!

Which breeder you going with. I have a friend that has an awesome dog from:

vom Moorehaus
Forrest E. Moore
Cataula
706-582-2793
forrest@vommoorehaus.com

I hear good thing about other dogs from this breeder. I will be getting Drath eventually as well.

Love my DK. Smartest dog I have ever owned and I use her about 98% for duck hunting.

I'm starting to get restless now.... Haven't gotten confirmation of a good breeding yet, but reading the book is getting me excited.

Got two, love them, very versatile dogs. Look into joining the VDD-GNA and local Great Lakes chapter, maybe go to a test or breed show, hook up with other owners in your area. They do have their limits in cold water, stationary or prolonged sub freezing situations. Use mine mostly for pointing grouse/upland birds, with a little waterfowl, rabbits, coons/etc.

If a vdd-gna chapter is too far away you can always train and test with a NAVHDA chapter there are a lot more of them and just test vdd-gna and NAVHDA for that matter. My biggest advice is don't start force training to young you will be excited to get to training I'm sure but keep it all very positive until the dog is mature. They are awesome dogs I think you picked a great breed and one of the only breeds in the US that is still breed to very high standards not like other breed registries (akc, ukc) the Germans know what they are doing when it comes to dogs and thanks to them they let us breed them to there standards here in the US.

Yeah, i have not completely decided if I'm going to test him or not, he's pretty much going to be my hunting buddy. Although, knowing me, once i get into something i usually take it all the way, so I'm not completely writing off testing.

Even if you never plan on running in a hunt test I would still train with a group you will learn a lot and all the stuff you read about training you can see put into practice and you make some good friends that way if and when you have an issue you call someone that has prolly seen the same thing.

@duckdon- good points to mention. That pic is priceless. I think I'm going to try the silent command system. I have a heck of a lot to learn. Looking into building a small loft for birds so I have them available to train. Looking forward to venturing into the unknown for me.
