I had to put my hunting buddy down last May and have now come around to thought of adding a new family member.

I am still thinking about it. I spend a lot of time away from home and the wife doesn't have a clue when it comes to basic training/obedience. I'd hate to ruin a decent dog.

It's a mediocre breeding. I'd pass.

What is it lacking?

I see MH and MH litters on RTF with asking prices more than this litter.

Trying to get a little more educated on how this all works fwiw.

Pedigrees can be a tough subject because unless you know the dogs, all you have to go off of is titles.

I don't know the stud, but I did run lots of tests with Roux and Cody. Both were quality animals in the hunt test world. I actually liked Roux's puppies better than I liked him, although he was obviously a really nice dog. Roux threw really nice marking puppies with a variety of different bitches. So....just based on that, I'd guess the stud is a pretty nice dog and his dam looks well bred too. So, the top end of the pedigree looks very solid.

The bottom end is where the breeding looks weak. Except for being a CPR, the dam has no other titles and she's only backed up by JH's. A JH title isn't exactly lights out. Remember, a bitch brings 50% to the table, so if you're gonna plunk your money down, go with a at least a MH bitch.

I've been training dogs since 1982, and if there is one thing I've learned, it's that lots of people try to make chicken salad out of chicken feathers. Initial price point is a minor thing when you consider your time and aggravation of trying to get a dog to an advanced level.

I'll give you an example....about 7 years ago, one of my buddies asked me to find him a puppy. So, I found him a fantastic litter at a good price ($1,100 a pup) and I told him about it and I could arrange the purchase for him. The very next day, he texted me and said he'd found a much cheaper littler. ($650) But here's the thing....he ended up spending WAY more on training over the long haul.

I wish you luck on your puppy search. You don't have to have an FC x FC breeding to get a good duck fetcher, but remember it costs just as much to feed and vet a boot likker as a star retriever.

I have talked to cat squirrel on the phone a time or 2. He is a wealth of knowledge and in my opinion you can take his advice to the bank.

Hey cat squirrel what you think about taking a mutt lab one with no papers and the potential of it being trained professional and the dog finishing outstanding?

Peds can be tricky. You can find a nicer one then that pretty easy. When buying a pup you get what you pay for but don't get a pup thats breed to hot just to have as a pet. Most of your really nice breed dogs need jobs or to be worked to be a nice pet.

I agree, paying the high price for a dog you know has great genes is the way to go
