I have a 2.5 year old lab, I have had him since he was about 1 year old, he is doing great as far as field work and retrieving. This was his first year in the field with us and he did great. But, when I put him in his kennel, he has a 6x6 in the shed and a 10x10 run that goes outside, when I walk out of the shed he starts barking and whining constantly, knocks over his water all the time and tries to get out as well. I thought it would subside by now but it hasn't, any suggestions? Thank you. |

He goes in fine, and usually he is fed when he is kenneled. And I did the treat deal when I was first teaching him to kennel |

Having kenneled dozens and dozens of dogs, I can tell you that this is a tough one. Some of them treat the kennel like home, and some like jail and a few like a sewer. As far as I know, there really aren't any magic fixes to this. Remember that dogs are incredibly attuned to routine and try to be reliable in your, airing, training, feeding, playing routines and you'll reduce the stress level for the pup. It is sort of like the adage, "say what you'll do and do what you say." For dogs being predictable is how you say what you'll do, and doing it simply reinforces. |

The dog in my avatar is 11 and allergic to chain link. When he was at "duck college" he paced the entire time, five months. Last time I left him in a kennel he paced until his pads bled. I tried a kennel in my back yard and gave up. He's just crazy. but..... Leave him in the house he is fine, back seat of the truck for days no problem. Leave him in the boat and go in a buddies camp, stays there for hours. My other two dogs, put them in a kennel "no worries boss, see you when you get back". They are all different. |
