Age isn't important I don't think personally anyway. If you have a dog that's very obedient and minds well you shouldn't use the collar until disobedience starts to happen. My dog was super obedient till his nuts dropped. That's when I started the collar

When you get to that part in your training program. Good way to ruin a dog quick.

Don't use a collar to teach, use it to reinforce a taught behavior. Dog needs to understand pressure before. Look up Bill Hillmann. Ecollars are only as effective as the person holding the remote, and they're a great way to ruin a dog if not used properly.

New guy chiming in. Be careful of building a collar conditioned dog. It won't take long for him to realize when he must obey if you overuse the collar. I've got an old dog who is just a house pet now. I worked with him when he was younger. He's set in his ways and won't look at you if he's 50 yards out and you call him sometimes, that is until he decides he wants to come.

I could put that collar on him this afternoon and you'd think he's been training for weeks. He knows what a collar is.

Bottom line, if you use the collar as a tool to work your dog, you will NEED the collar to work your dog. If you use the collar carefully and properly (others know what this is better than me), then you'll end up with a good hunting dog, collar or no collar.

I consider myself average and my dog is smart. He can open doors and shit. And no matter what method I used he figured out the collar

I don't think that's him pretending to hear or not hear something. It's a training issue and whatever command he's being given at the moment has not been taught and then reinforced to 110% compliance. My dog does it too. He's only 14 months and is not 100% reliable on some things yet. He will get trained until I get compliance every time, regardless of the distractions. He hears me, he's not pretending anything, but blatantly ignoring the first command.

I would not advise to not use the ecollar sometimes for fear of having to always have it to work your dog. That is not how a collar is used. Teach your dog, force, then reinforce the commands using the collar where applicable. Once your dog is trained, you won't need the ecollar but I would still advise having it in case. Not using it periodically early on could send mixed signals to the dog that he has to comply sometimes and other times he can get away with X. Corrections are time sensitive and dogs need consistency.

When he has the collar on he's finely polished. He knows compliance. He fi gu red that collar out within the first 30 minutes. I'm telling you. He's smarter than most of the forum members on here. Maybe even myseld

Depends on what methods you wanna use . There's no set age some start at 6 months some at 3 months some at 13 weeks old . I did mine at 6 months just because I didn't have a collar yet . What people do realize is from weeks old every one uses pressure whether it's a choke pinch or e collar . You can do all basic stuff through ff without a e collar just by ear pinch toe hitch and pressure on the neck with lease or a 5o ft check cord . As stated above look at bill hillman videos . Iv got a chessie and she got her first Finnish pass at 1.5 year old by using his training methods

If by smart you mean he's learned that he can get away with things when this bulky thing isn't strapped to his neck and he can't when it is, then yeah. If you use the collar correctly this won't happen.

By smart I mean he can do Litterally whatever the hell he wants. He rocks the baby in her swing when she cries. He opens doors. He brings my wife her wine glass when she asks. He can get me a beer, I can tell him to get Litterally anything and he'll get it. I can tell him to find my cell phone when I lose it. Smart like he's a damn person smart and no matter what he knows exactly what's going on. Like he knows the English language he just can't speak it smart
