Tried to hunt my 1 year old lab during early teal. He would watch birds fall, swim out to them but would not pick them up. He's worked with dead ducks during training and has no problem retrieving them when I throw them but lookung back i may not have done enough of it....What should I do? How can I get him more birdy?

Do you use any scents on your dummies? Maybe the correlation of scent would help him understand what he is really after out there?

Sounds like somthing that will def need more field work.

Sounds like you need to force fetch your dog. That should help with that

Sometimes all it takes to really turn them on is watching anathor dog on a few retrieves . My female seaira (20 months) had that problem , about not wanting to pick them up. We sent 3ck's "cash" on a few and let her go after he was halfway there. She would catch up and swim back with him, next bird I sent her first and then sent cash when she was halfway, well she hustled to get that bird first. It worked for me and I think it. "Clicked " into place for her .

If you can get yo the bird go out and help him. If he is stopping and sniffing the bird reach down and toss it a few feet get real excited and send him again.

Force fetching is over rated and over used in training. The dog is just confused.
