Post Winter Training
Just curious what others do to keep there dogs going when its all snow and iced up outside? I run some drills in the basement and try and throw the odd mark outside....just seeing what everyone else gets up to.

Turn old the old Nintendo duck hunting game and make him watch it.

Seriously, though, you're doing what you can to keep the thought in his head.

Mine sleeps in front of the woodstove, he deserves a few months off after season.

I just switch to using only canvas dummies with more scent and train outside like I do in the summer. I've found the plastic ones just freeze hard whereas the canvas (or better the new cordura type nylon ones) still stay soft. After you are done, store the canvas dummies in a place where they will dry before the next time.

They can still find them in pretty deep snow.

I never thought about getting some pheasants that's a good idea. Chucking into the snow
Is pretty fun watching the dogs dive around in the powder....gives me a good chuckle.

I bring the dog trapping and fishing all winter. Granted I don't have a retriever, but I just bring her everywhere and stay sharp on her obedience and leash work. That way she's not laying around getting sloppy.

I know a lot of guys that work on their handling in their shop with short 15'-20' drills.

Down here pheasant tower shoots are a fun way to keep them active.
