Yes, roads are open but power will be out for about another month in the south of terrebonne and lafourche parish. Just keep that in mind cause most places are just taking cash down here for gas, dip, etc
Our church was working with the Church of Christ - DRT (Disaster Response Team) who
stationed in Jean Lafitte at their Civic Center Auditorium....
The DRT had sent our church a specific list of items they wanted for distribution - and yes the
roads were open - likely by the work of the military and power company linemen who easily
outnumbered the military who seemed to only just now be getting stationed....
We delivered a truck load of items to the DRT team of folks who were setup there - with a full
clothes washing team as well as a distribution team from multiple states across the nation....
Jean Lafitte not only got hit with the wind and power outages - but is covered in several
inches of nasty mud which is a biohazard mix of bayou bottom mud mixed with oil sludge
and septic waste....
Stayed with my family in Bayou Blue who is still without power - but thanks to the great
work of a virtual army of electrical linemen - had great cajun seafood from Big Al's and
refreshing margarita's from Capt Lalo's Cabin across from the mall....
A biter sweet trip due to seeing all the destruction but upbeat to see all my cajun brothers
and sisters as well as volunteers from across the nation pulling together.....
FYI - the Houma area will have a serious housing crisis very soon as most of the apartment
complexes are damaged and being condemned and whether they have power or not folks
are being evicted due to water damage, mold, and other safety issues....
In Houma and Bayou Blue - Two out of three houses have significant damage - but are
mostly tarped and livable still and most have generators or family with power now...
The seafood district down by the "Government Building" is nearly a total loss with
three out of four homes badly damaged as well as serious damage to all the boats....
Still a rough situation but they are digging out and sticking together like always !
