1860 Gator-Tail w/ 35 GTR
MM Brand: Gator-Tail Horsepower: 35 Boat Brand: Gator-Tail Boat Size: 18x60 Boat Layout: Open, with a gun box on the port side Speeds | Shallow Water: 28 MPH w/ myself (200lbs) & a full tank of gas Speeds | Deep Water: 27.5 MPH " " " " Conditions Tested In: Trinity River, Wind N @ 10MPH, Saltwater Let me start with the engine... This thing is a machine!! I've driver long tails here in Texas all my life but this is my first SD to own. The thing that sold me on the Gator-Tail was: #1 Neutral & #2 Instant Reverse The reverse is so nice when I'm pulling up to the dock or launching the boat by myself... I simply pull a lever and I'm backing up The boat handles well in shallow & deep waters. Gator-Tail put a rear hunt deck on the stern and filled it with flotation. The two pods on both the port and starboard side that I sit on are both filled as well along with a portion of the bow. (I cross open bays here in Texas a lot) The spud poles were very useful during the hunting season I was able to pull the boat up to the area I wanted to hunt stick the poles in the ground and throw up the blind. I had Gator-Tail outfit the boat with a blind, I considered building one but the design they have was very ingenious and easy to remove took me 5 min by myself. I have a receiver winch mount on the bow which helps me get over levees and into my ponds. I've added a trolling motor and plan to add a poling platform having a removable one built here in town. Last night I worked out my design with some new flounder lights. A quick trip to the shop this weekend for some aluminum will allow me to mount my setup into the winch receiver. I'm running a 12V system and just giving these new lights a shot for the time being. Hunting Season I took 2 guys plus me all around 200lbs, full tank of gas, my dog, 96Q ice chest full to the brim, a radio cooler (w/ full size battery) Boat ran 22-23 MPH through the ICW. Boat has performed flawlessly out in the bay and last weekend I had it in some rough conditions 30MPH + winds which limited me to the back coves however the conditions still made for an interesting & wet ride home. Its fun being the only one on the water when all the wind gets blown out... I had a guy waving at me the other day that stopped me and said don't go right there's no water... That's exactly where I went

Re: 1860 Gator-Tail w/ 35 GTR
nice rig! pretty good # for the size & floatation/added weight. why so wide - more fishing or the open water? drop deck adds 1 -1.5 ft, so it's really 19 -19.5', right? thx

Re: 1860 Gator-Tail w/ 35 GTR
Nice rig, looking at 17-18x54 Gator Tail with or without a "hunt deck" right now and I have to cross a few nasty bays, so flotation is a requirement. Got a couple of questions.
Did having the "hunt deck" foamed in cut down the size of the floatation boxes at the transom?
How is steering with the motor back (1+ feet) and those two boxes?
Did GT wire your boat with that panel hung on the transom?
Does it look like there is any way for water to get in the hunt deck and soak the foam? What about the bow or boxes?
Is there any floatation in the floor?
Thanks

Re: 1860 Gator-Tail w/ 35 GTR
Sweet looking rig!! That is the exact rig (minus the hand rails) I ordered from GT about 4 weeks ago. Mine will have the poling platform, gun box and rod box. I wonder why "flotation" never really got mentioned when I ordered mine. So I don't know if mine will have it or not. Does flotation add enough weight to slow the rig down? Also, did GT put that spud pole holder on the hunt deck or did you add that yourself?

Re: 1860 Gator-Tail w/ 35 GTR
Yes the hunt deck is not added onto the boat. The boat hull interior dimensions is reduced to accomodate the Hunt deck. Nice review on your rig man. Glad you like your rig. At least you got one of the 3 superior MM's on the market.

Re: 1860 Gator-Tail w/ 35 GTR
Thanks guys, I think all the questions were answered besides a few. Sorry its been a rough couple weeks and wasn't able to get back and answer all the questions. If I've missed anyones just let me know... The huntdeck is my favorite part of the boat. I use the spud pole as my anchor when wading, of course the anchor is out as well just incase but its so nice getting back into the boat. I went with the extra width because I'm more on the open bays and back lakes in skinny water and prefer stability. If I was constantly back up in the marsh making tight turns I probably would have gone with a 48 or 54 model. It was a big decision for me and I debated about it for awhile... I like the width its more stable than my 16x54 Jon I had I can walk all over the boat and not have to hold on to the rail or keep a low center of gravity. I opted to put the handrails down the whole boat for 1 reason... I wouldn't have to drill cleates to secure the boat at the dock... I started off with them just on the front deck to secure the dekes but started thinking about it and decided to bring them down the whole length of the boat. As for Wallisville I need to get out there soon and mix it up, the boat handles well and I've had it in some good mud... I'm committed this weekend to fishing despite the poor weather forecast. Hopefully have some good shots of a stringer next to the boat As far as the winch mount Kyle and I discussed it and we started off going with one that would mount underneath the bow then I asked about integrating it and what you see is what I got. I can't thank the guys at Gator-Tail enough for helping me out.

Went out riding yesterday by myself took some videos I really need another buddy in the boat so I don't have to hold the camera and work throttle and trim and try and shoot a nice video It was too perfect of a day for me and work held everyone else indoors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeSpYDg717Ihttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XEE5AAD0SAhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mxVPKJfjq8http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsqvNh9l1lA

Re: 1860 Gator-Tail w/ 35 GTR
I get 23-25MPH with 3 guys, 3 batteries I have 1 trolling, 1 cranking and one for my cooler / radio setup I made. Also had ice chest full of beer full tank of gas 2 dogs was in deep water whole time until we got to the pond where it dropped from 8-10' to 12-15"
The real key is to balance that weight so you don't wear your shoulder out. I can feel the strain when my dog walks around the boat when were under load. I try and keep her very balanced while loading boat.

Re: 1860 Gator-Tail w/ 35 GTR
that is a badass setup. I cant wait to get mine. I was looking at gettin the GTB 1860 with the GTR35 as well but havent decided if I was gona get the drop deck or not. I also was thinking about gettin a CC w/ hydraulic steering cause I have a 14ft jon boat with a 25hp johnson w/out the CC and I hate drivin that thing far distances. Im new to mud boats and motors. Whats the disadvantages of having a CC versus the tiller handle like my jon boat and how much do you have to fight the motor?

Re: 1860 Gator-Tail w/ 35 GTR
There is some fighting of the motor, Gator-Tail has a trim tab I have since had an larger one installed and bent my skeg slightly to reduce the pressure the motor places on my arm while riding. A balanced load is key, if the boat is balanced I can remove my hand and just hold the throttle and she will not move, so effectively I have removed all tiller torque. I had a 30HP 15' Jon that I ran in the bay for awhile until I sold it and bought this thing, no comparison GTR is faster, can go more places. The CC models are just as capable although I have been in many sticky situations where I had to pull my motor out of the water / mud turn it all the way to one side and set it back in to get my bow pointed correctly, for me a tiller is like 4WD you can really get after it quicker than a CC model in terms of thrashing motor back & forth.

Re: 1860 Gator-Tail w/ 35 GTR
how do you like the pods on the back being level with the bow rail compared to the regular seat that sits a couple inches lower? Any noticable difference? I'm looking to order something similar to your rig within the next week or 2 and i'm just trying to make the right decisions from peoples mudboat trial/error expertise!!
Thanks
