Post PD 36 Lower Unit - Should prop turn freely?
Just never noticed. I am getting ready to change my seals. And, I noticed that the prop has a good bit of resistance when I hand turn it (motor off/clutch disengaged). It's not real hard but it does not spin freely like my 150 Evinrude. Should it? :?

Sounds normal to me, its not gonna spin anything like an outboard.

I think the gears in the lower unit probably cause the resistance even when the motor is declutched. So, I still have a little concern because I obviously had a lot of water in my lower unit and I worry that some damage was done.

I have the seal kit and have the prop nut off. Trying to find a prop wrench to remove the prop. Anybody know where to get one?

I've been using a crowbar and it works great...

Really? I put a crowbar on it and I was afraid to go to hard on top of the shaft. I was afraid of slightly bending the shaft. I guess that wasn't a problem for you! Maybe I'll man up and try it again with a crowbar.

May not be a good idea, I dunno. Its worked though, several times. The one they use on these props is different that what I've seen for a regular outboard. Looks more like a piece of flat bar. Only thing I would say you need to be careful with when using a crowbar is messing up the threads. Usually I can get it to break free pretty easy with a crow bar, and then just turn it by hand. Make sure you use anti-seize when putting it back on

There's a pic of their prop wrench on pg 18-19

Get a piece of flat bar and drill a hole in it big enough for the shaft. Viola, prop wrench.

Get a 6ft 2x4,drill a hole in one end big enough to fit over the prop shaft and slip it on the shaft and slide it up between the blades of the prop.Drop a 1/2 inch bolt in the hole by the clutch(look at the owners manual for location) and bear down on the 2x4 till the prop spins loose-it will be pretty tight at first since its pulled up on a tapered shaft with a bushing.Using the 2x4 will keep your threads from getting buggered up,just wire brush the threads before you make it back up.

Don't forget to apply marine grade never-seez to the shaft and what not before you put the prop back on. http://www.neverseezproducts.com/marine.htm

The 2 x 4 worked great. Prop came right off. Draining the old oil out now. Looks really milky. The good thing is that there doesn't seem to be any metal particles in the oil. I don't think I will have any other problem. Hopefully the new seal will keep the water out. I have some marine grade grease - will that work in place of the Never Seez? No stores around me had Never Seez. If grease doesn't work then I'll probably be able to get some this weekend.
