Post flat bottom vs. ribbed boats for mud motors
Just wondering what everyone thinks.

Do you prefer a flat bottom boat or a ribbed standard bottom boat with the use of a mud motor?

I had ran my motor on a custom built boat that had 3 crimps and it turned on a dime. In the chit it would perform well. Now to compare it to a flat bottom hull, the flat bottom is better in straight mud because of the drag issues. This is just my opinion though

like dw said, its gunna hurt you in the mud because of more drag.
If your like me and just run shallow water, stumps, and grass then a ribbed bottom doesnt affect you that much (unless you are in some really thick grass)
Where a mud hull would really shine for me is for the thicker construction and longitudinal braces so it doesnt get beat up in stumps.

Post Re: flat bottom vs. ribbed boats for mud motors
I have owned five different boat hulls on which I have hung shorttail mud motors. Four were flat and smooth bottom with no crimps or keels. One (bad idea) was a shallow deadrise modified V. That boat didn't last long. I will never again run a mud boat with crimps or keels. But then again, I have frequent need to go shallow over either hard mud, soft mud, thick vegetation and shallow gravelly shoals.

If you are in relatively deep water and are buying a mud motor for weeds only then knock yourself out with a non-smooth bottom boat.
