 Re: surface rust on shotgun
There is a po boy version of parkerizing that only needs mild heating.... Forgot the brand, cost about 20.00, gpt it at a gun show - I did an old pump gun that was a rust ball and it looked good and stopped the rusting....
Looked a bit like a black krylon crackle finish when done...

 Re: surface rust on shotgun
The steel wool cuts into the bluein a bit...
Just don't use Naval Jelly unless you want ALL the blue removed I made that discovery / mistake once....
My old Belgan Browning A5 rusts when you look at it wrong - spray with 3in1 - wipe down after afew hours with cotton cloth - then RemOil to finish seems to work best on it....

I think Brownells Aluma-Hyde - was the stuff I was tryin to remember in that first post.... It was a last resort due to the gun's condition and turned out great.... Lasted for years.... They have some instructional vids too.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raeeeCc9SWw

 Re: surface rust on shotgun
I've used steel wool and oil to take off some surface rust. Just be careful and it shouldn't do too much damage to the bluing. I have an old ithica that had a lil on it when it was acquired. That's what I used to get it off. Keep in the safe in a silicone sock now, rust never came back. Hunted with it for several years and just wiped it down with a silicone rag after almost every hunt.

My gun is already camo, but i dont know about you. i wouldn't want to send my gun off for 6 to 8 weeks to have it dipped even if it is for P.D.

 Re: surface rust on shotgun
Rem oil and let it soak. It will penetrate the rust and you can wipe it off after a few hours.

 Re: surface rust on shotgun
kroil will dissolve the rust right off. I suspect any rust penetrationg oil will do the same.

 Re: surface rust on shotgun
Steel wool (used lightly) or even a grainy rag -you just need something with a little roughness to it, used with the gun powder solvent that you use to clean the barrel. Then wiped down good with rem oil or the like.
Then you have to keep it oiled.
If you get too much of that bluing off it will be a problem forever or until you get reblued.

 Re: surface rust on shotgun
I've used Rusty Duck gun oil to remove surface rust before. Spray it down good & let it soak for a few mins then wipe it off. Gettin harder to find it around here now tho.

 Re: surface rust on shotgun
Forget the dip and try this. I know it sounds lame but it's amazing how good this works. 3 seasons of hunting saltwater and around salt cedars with no rust. It's even more durable then a dip job. You can find my benelli on this post.

 Re: surface rust on shotgun
Aeon, that camo finish of your is first class! I have several of my guns finished in Stealth Coat. You can find the place at www.gunfinish.com and I have a 12 gauge that I take on my boat while fishing in salt water that doesn't have a speck of rust on it in over 4 years that it's been on my boat. If you take the gun apart yourself, the finish will cost you like $120 or so I think it's a pretty good deal.
