Post Re: For dguidry
Thanks for posting that. I've built strip plank hulls before and let me tell you it's a pain in the ass. Each 1" strip was beaded and coved on my router table then edge glued to each other onto frames. You know what it sounds like when the meat at the end of your middle finger comes in contact with a router blade. I heard it on that project. If you eat at Pauls Pirogue in Carencro, LA that pirogue on the wall I built using this method of construction.

The finish on those boats is typical of the beauty one can achieve with clear coating nicely grained wood strips with fiberglass and epoxy. I thought about clear coating my crawfish skiff like that but camo'd instead. My plan is to build another but clear coat it and do some crazy High end woodwork on the decks, interior and seating, strap on a Gatortail, and market it to the discerning consumer, i.e. rich person. I'd just park it at Grosse Savann, the Florence Club, etc and put a for sale sign on it. I know I'd sell more than I could ever have time to make.

Addendum edit: I built a boat for a high end customer who later divorced his wife. You know what the biggest argument was in the property division? My boat. Both wanted it.

How much is one of those boats? They look like if they'd cost a lot more than one of our aluminum mud hulls.

Those boats are cool

They have a guy in Pierre Part who has a few put put boats that are made of strip. I would love to find one and rebuild it.

Those boats are really nice, but so much time and energy goes into them, and the finishing on them makes them more of a work of art to be admired, than something to be used on a daily or regular basis.
