 Re: Lab that can't swim?
It will learn. The fact that it is doing water retrieves is a big step for a weak swimmer. My ol dog swam like a rock as a puppy. Some dogs swim high and some lower in the water for what ever reason. Hell, my wienner dog can swim better than that though.

Get in the water with it and hold its tail up while it swims --- they will learn

 Re: Lab that can't swim?
Brad is right. My wienner dog started out trying to swim just like that. But I took her a couple times in shallow water and held up her tail to keep her level as she swam and she caught on really quick. She now swims level and just fine.

 Re: Lab that can't swim?
I had a big gangly yellow male a long time ago, no matter what we did he wasn't getting it. I had an old ski belt in the shed, buckled that around his hind quarters and in no time he had it. It was a sight to behold, but it worked.
On another note, this looks like a fairly young pup and he has no problem with going and getting it, so I think he will figure it out.

 Re: Lab that can't swim?
I call that the "puppy paddle" and they all do it to a degree at first. Keep working with it in the shallows and gradually get deeper. He will learn soon enough. Looks like he has lots of desire and that is good. Duckdon

It'll be fine. Id be stoked with the fact it jumped in with no hesitation. My prissy a$$ boy gunner won't even go for a retrieve until he's had time to feel th water out, but were workin on that. Yours will get the idea in no time.
