GTR prop spins in neutral
I am new to the GTR 35, but I remember reading that having too much oil in the transmission can cause the prop to spin while in neutral. I just changed the oil in my transmission(looked well overdue) and noticed that the prop spins. How do I know if I have the right amount of oil in the transmission?

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
When you fill it I think the 2 holes should be at 11 o'clock and 3 o'clock. Add oil in the top until it comes out the bottom hole. You may also want to change the grease in your shaft if you haven't.

GTR prop spins in neutral
Oil has nothing to fo with it!! The grease in the lower unit might need to be changed !!

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
I checked the oil level, and greased the lower unit this afternoon and the prop still spins. I noticed it is actually spinning in reverse. Is it possible that caliper is still engaged? How would I check that?

Take the cover off and look to see if the pads are still grabbing or rubbing the plate without the reverse handle engaged.

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
mine has always spun in neutral. It spins just as fast as if it is in gear. It will slow down when it is in the water but also still has enough force to push the boat forward while in netural. I just learned to deal with it. I would like to know a solution to it also.

GTR prop spins in neutral
Maybe a tight belt could cause this?

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
My prop spins a little. It's nothing like a fully engaged prop. I've bumped my prop once & so has my dog with it running in neutral. In both instances neither one of us was hurt or bleeding. The prop will stop if something is introduced.

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
Sometimes my spins in neutral, sometimes it doesn't. I changed the fluid in the planetary gear twice, that didn't seem to make a difference. I have noticed when you put fresh grease in, it doesn't spin. Does any of the mud buddy motors do this? And don't even compare this to a gdsd, that thing is bolted direct. Try bumping into that prop while the engine is running. Dog walker, 11 and 3??? Your drain scews on the planetary gear line up different than mine?

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
Mine did this once. It was because I'd tightened the clutch bolt too tight & it was putting enough friction on the plate, the gear was turning. Once I loosened it a lil bit it quit. No problems since.

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
Mine has spun since day one. Here is what I KNOW to cause the issue.... It only spins if you have a GTR, Non reverse models wll NOT spin in neutral.
Too much transmission oil will cause "extra fluid coupling" kinda like an Auto tranny torque converter.. the fluid will cause the outer ring of the transmission to spin around the crankshaft extension of the transmisison. This
Lower unit grease is probably the BIGGEST thing to a fast spinning prop in conjunction with the Too much trans oil, becasue the fluid coupling effect wants to spin the belt, if your grease is older/ lost thickness the prop will spin faster. Also you will eventually lose some grease out of the seals over time because thats what happens with normal wear anbd heat cycles with Rubber seals riding on metal wear sleeves. Air pockets can be present in the shaft that need to be worked out over time. When I rebuilt my lower unit I hande packed the Needle bearing and the roller bearing then I pumped grease into the shaft to fill it up. Upon instal the prop did not spin in neutral at all, but once I ran the motor a couple ours in the marsh it began to spin faster becasue the grease was filling all the nooks and crannys between the shaft, tube, and bearings. So keep the grease in the shaft full but dont over fill becasue too much pressure will push the seal lips out. the right amount of grease will keep the spinning to a minimum.
Unless you take one of these apart you probably dont get what I am saying, but it is a quite simple concept. Good luck getting your rig ready!

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
I'd add that I wouldn't add grease to the lower unit without opening up the drain screw first. That way you never run into that pressure issue you mentioned?

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
Camo's post is out in left field.... LOL The fluid coupling of the trans pulley spinning around the cranks shaft is whats making it sin in neutral. In an NON reverse model there is only a clutch, so therefore the crankshaft can spin freely without the pulley spnning.

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
Actually boys, I've dealt with both, but no, I'm no GTR FE like yall. I'd forgotten that he said it was spinning in rev, that's why I corrected myself in that last post. The prop CAN spin in fwd on the non reverse motors, but like I said, when it does, it's usually an indication of a problem or issue that needs to be addressed.

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
Well I came to the board to see why my new 2011 GTR with 2 hours spins in neutral hard enough to push me into my dock. Looks like I'm not alone. Guess I'll have to treat it like the race Merc outboards and kill the engine for neutral!
It would be nice if the gator tail crew would comment.

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
Mine usually doesn't spin very much in neutral when it's in the water. Maybe one of us should contact Hoyt and just ask. I'll call tommorrow and then post what I find out. But I think I know wha he's going to say.

Re: GTR prop spins in neutral
Giga quit startin shit. Terry was asking that question to the original poster. He asked a question and Marcus answered it. Got Dux, the only thing I would add is, when new the transmission comes with grease in it. Once you purge it out with oil after the break in and put the correct amount of oil in as per owners manual. The prop does not spin as much. Also a smaller lighter boat will notice it alot more than a larger one. When changing the oil, remove both screws and drain empty. (the 1st change will require forcing the grease out with oil) Then position the screw holes at 1 & 7 o'clock. Fill with oil till oil comes out the bottom hole, this is all the oil needed. (anymore will cause excessive prop spin or blow out the seals of the transmission) Replace screws and your done. I do mine every 50 hours with my oil change.
