Post Why do MM companies use Vanguards?
Just out of curiosity does anyone know the reason everyone is using the B&S motors over Kawasaki, Honda, Kohler, ect? I know they use the others on longtails but I don't see any on the surface drives...

They seem to be the only big blocks that work well out of the box in our application.

I'm pretty sure they use vanguards to help keep the service centers in business with case gasket replacements.

It's kind of like the Apple iPhone. It certainly isn't the best engine out there but there are more aftermarket parts available for them. People have learned how to work on them so they are comfortable with em. Also they got the niche and everyone on the bandwagon so it's hard for other engine manufactures to break through. They will probably be the engine of choice till someone comes out with a breakthrough that changes the industry and gives folks a reason to jump ship.

I DuckBoom I don't have a mud motor at present but when I do it will likely be a Kohler 36. I've had a 25 and a 27 on lawn mowers that have never broken. The 25 finally flat wore out and the 27 is still going strong even after being fully submurged at one point.

Do you guys thing it has anything to do with the factory warranty lenght?

Briggs is 3 yrs and Kohler is 2yrs.

Just sayin, it might be a selling point for the mud motor company.

Those Briggs seem to be pretty reliable up here in the great north. Even in the -20 degree weather we have up here. They are built in Wisconson though so that might be why!. ;)

I realize its not the exact same motor but pretty much everyone has a smaller Briggs on there craftman snowblowers around here.

God I hate winter in MN!

The 3 yr warranty is new, so that ain't it. They work well out of the box. The carb is friendly to our application and the motor has a good torque curve for us. They have tried the kohlers and generacs and had lots of carb and governor problems. It takes a lot more work to get the other brands to function properly in our application. Briggs foots the bill for most of the replacement parts and labor on their crappy engines. That's the main reason I see that the mm manufactures put up with the poor quality control and poor design on the briggs. Just my take on it.

I'm a big fan of Honda motors, I asked the same thing when I was at Go-Devil building my rig. They told me that from the SD stand point, they seem to idle better or run at better rpms. Something along those lines. I have a 20 horse honda pressure washer and love it, but then again so far after 30 hours, my briggs has been nice. I always hated on briggs, but now I'm coming around.

I have 162 hours on my Briggs 35. No problems yet, but nothing last forever. You gotta take care of your engine to. Lack of maintenace ain't gonna help any. " CEAN" oil , Fresh gasoline, properly ajusted vavles etc. I've found over the years nothing beats a good carburetor. No matter how well the engine is built, if the carb is crap you ain't going any where.
Briggs carbs work. You can by a spare one for $85each online from Mud Buddy in there online special section. They sell them cheap because they take them off of new engines that they are going to put Mikunis on for upgraded or modded engine packages. That's cheap!!!
