Post trouble starting engine when hot - briggs 35
lately i've had some trouble starting my engine when it's hot. it's strange to me in that it runs near perfect in all other conditions. this season, i changed my plugs, then the micro fuel filter. when putting up the boat last, i changed the fuel water separator filter. been using 93 - supposedly ethanol free & marine stabil - maybe a little too much stabil. engine's 3 yrs & few months, 225 hrs old. seems to be fuel flow & i've checked quick connect, tank vent, filter connections. pump bulb has been firm all times except once. it cranks fine/full power to starter, but doesn't want to turn over. i'm thinking of seafoaming the byotch but looking for next ideas. thanks

Is it the starter that is not cranking very fast? Or does the starter spin fine, but the motor wont turn over?

Also, do you have a tach? If so, is it registering rpms while it is cranking? If not, get one.

the starter sounds normal, cranking fast & the motor won't turn over. i have a standard tiny tach, but haven't noticed/looked when cranking - and boats in shed 45 min away. thanks my man!

Is the starter not contacting the fly wheel? if the starter is spinning and the motor is not sounds like the abendix on the satrter is not engaging. Sorry for the spelling.

not sure on flywheel - but believe so b/c if i lift prop up, it spins on the key turn - engine just doesn't want to turn over. one more note - on my last trip, after ~10 times trying to start it hot & a few squeezes on the bulb, my buddy said try pulling off the air & pre filter (which is also new this season) – and that worked / only took ~3 key twists & some blackish smoke came out da muffler.

might be time to check your valve lash, could be the rpoblem with not wanting to start when engine is warm

yeah - was thinking of trying that. never done it myself & not sure if the guy servicing it the other 2 years did. it doesn't ping. when i had the rig in town to redo the popup, i tried to bring it to 2 briggs service joints for that but couldn't get 'em to do it while i waited / b/f heading out to hunt or blind build. do i really need a torque wrench to set the valve covers & lock nut? buy cover gaskets too – in case they leak after? anyone good w/ experience in venice or myrtle grove want $40 to set ‘em? f’in boat maintenance.

Do you know if the motor has a low oil sensor?

Oh and FYI, if you are cranking and you dont register any rpms on the tach then the igntion system is not firing. If you are registering rpms, then the igntion is firing, then more than likely you have some sort of a fuel/fuel supply problem.

not sure on the low oil sensor. i have all engine #s for this stock 'gtr35 (except marsh mellow) bought new in '08. my vanguard parts list book says i have an oil pressure switch (briggs pt 841281) - guess that's it.

Yea, that is the part #, but it doesnt mean that your motor was equipped with one.

a new fuel water separator filter seems to have fixed the issue - i didn't run the boat as hard this weekend as the one b/f (hunted a different area). old filter was just under a yr old, but only had ~65 hrs on it. i don't think my standard '08 gtr 35 has an oil pressure switch / i couldn't find it (around the oil filter area). thanks guys
