got a 1436 and i want to put a mud motor on it, I know I dont want to go over a 25hp but im not sure i want to go even that high? Just wanted to get some feedback and maybe some suggestions on sizes and hp and brands and any other advice you might have? thanks in advance....

I ran a 1977 14-36 all last year with a 23hp Dixie on the back on it.It was fun and fast,But way to much motor.I broke 4 of the ribs,Dam there swamped it all the time. I put fuel and battery up front still had to add 2 sandbags when i ran it alone.If your thinking Surface Drive go with a 10- 16 hp on it.I dont know about a longtail never ran one on that boat.I would guess same hp try to keep your weight down.

You'd die putting a 25 on that boat. Find an old used 9 HP longtail and get somebody to weld you a grab bar in it. You'll be able to ease around in it. There's no sense putting a nice motor on a $200 boat. Save your money for when you get ready to buy another boat.

yea I was thinking somewhere between a 9 -15, I dont think I want a long-tail, but I know I want a surface drive...

The little Copperhead surprised the hell outta several folks this spring on lake Miccosukee, Fl I think it was a ?12hp? and man would it run

yeh, i wouldnt go anything over 15hp. real weight issue. i have a 7hp orion sd on my 1436 with high sides and i will get 15mph with just me and the dog. i put about 375lbs in it and get about 8mph. she was a plowin bitch. more hp would help but not to the point of this thing getting up and just flyin. would need to get a bigger boat if you are gonna haul loads of weight.

Yep.. they are right. 36" bottom is easy to flip (have experience sinking one with a 32" bottom multiple times and my buddy sank his with a 36" bottom) and weight sensitive. Good for about 2 men and a dog. Copperhead 12 would be best engine for it IMO. The 12 is worth it over the 10 because it has like 1/3 more displacement so the difference is perceptible. I ran the 10, 12, and 18, and liked all of them. The engine on the 18 is much smoother but too heavy for 36" bottom IMO

Do they make any short tails less than 23? I'd like a short tail surface drive but haven't seen any. I'm not completely opposed to a long tail, all I know is that a buddy of mine had a gd that gave him a lot of hell!

I had a 18 hp longtail on a 14 ft it wasnt to much power worked good it was a older motor so it was heavy but I also ran a 35 hp outboard on it when people said it was to much but if you can safely handle the power then run the most power you can handle and feel safe. I think the 18 hp SD would work good. By the way 14 ft with 35 hp outboard hang on !!

not to mention, but what was discussed on another thread had to deal with the game warden bustin your ass for having the boat motor hp over the limit for the boat. some GW's will fuk with you and some wont. for a 1436 it is probably around 10 to 12 hp.
