Right oil filter for prodrive 36hp?
After reading some of the posted info on this site I am now more confused than ever on the the right oil filter to change on my new to me prodrive 36hp. The "prodrive maintenance" post in this section lists " Briggs-492932S ". The engine manual I downloaded (following a link I found on this site as well) lists briggs filter # 842921. Info on the 842921 filter lists it as for "big block engines" when I find it for sale on Amazon but I can't find the filter listed (at least not by a parts number search) on the Briggs&Stratton website. The briggs site states the following for the 492932S filter:
Oil Filter (492932S) Part Number: 492932S Used for pressure lubricated engines (most Intek⢠and Vanguard⢠OHV engines and selected L-head twin cylinder engines). Contains oil filter (492932S).
Not trying to turn changing an oil filter into rocket science but was hoping someone could clear up my confusion (which is compounded by the fact that the oil filter that came on my used unit was different from both the above listed filters). The prodrive manual describes maintenance on the lower unit and frame but does not address the engine itself. Just don't want to damage the engine over something as dumb as putting on the wrong filter. Thanks for any advice.

The search feature is really kool. You could try using that or look up above to the sticky on PD maintenance.

Re: Right oil filter for prodrive 36hp?
Thanks for the replies but I don't think you guys are understanding my question. I am well familar with the "search function" and my post specifically questions the post on "Pro drive maintenance" two of you were kind enough to refer me back to again. The post on "pro drive maintenance" states to use B&S filter #492932S while the B&S engine manual for 36hp vanguard engines I have been looking at states to use filter # 842921. The info on the filter #842921I can find online specifically states it is for "big block" engines while some of the info on the net states the 492932S filter is for engines UP TO 26hp. The "pro drive maintenance" post also states you only need to put in 2 quarts of engine oil and the B&S engine manual states to put in 2.3-2.4 quarts. It took about 2.3 quarts to register at "full" on the dipstick so evidence from my point of view is that the engine manual is correct and there is a discrepancy with the posted information. I am just asking others with more experience than I with these engines to verify what filter they are using.
Thanks again

Use the 492932 if your going to stick with the Briggs. That is what came on mine and what I have always used. What everyone using the Briggs has always used that I have seen. From what I remember that was the specified filter in my maunual. The Briggs will run you about 12.00 but you can get a quality filter from other brands for about 4.00 each. You can get the Briggs just about anywhere, Walmart, Lowes or HD.

I've always used the 492932 except one time I had a WIX but can't remember the number. I get the Briggs filter from Tractor Supply for 9 bucks. Yes is takes about 2 1/4 quarts if you drain it to the last drop but 2 quarts will work fine, if not the low oil pressure switch wouldn't let you run anyway.

One filter moves 157 more oil molecules than the other. You will go faster because the oil will be cooler. LOL

Fill oil till it reads 1/2 way between the hash marks. Dont fill to the top mark. Some motors dont like that much oil.
