 SETX Performance PD Mod Review
About a month ago I decided I needed mods due to too much weight on a couple of successful bowfishing trips so I searched looking to find a good carb, head and exhaust set up but I found mixed emotions over (cam, heads and exhaust) vs. (carb, heads and exhaust) I decided to give Cody a call and explained I wasn't concerned about a faster top speed I just wanted to be able to run the same with a heavy load. After we talked about the two options above, he suggested we work with a new carb, heads, and exhaust. From my past experiences with motors outside of the MM world, this made since to me and I just couldn't get the idea of heads and exhaust and keeping the factory carb so I placed the order.42 Mikuni, Cody custom intake and heads, and a Marshmellow exhaust w/baffle keeping my 4350rpm limiters.
BEFORE on a light load (350 lbs of me and gear) I could run 30 and averaged about 29. When I add my bowfishing deck, genny, coolers, 2-3 men, big bucket of fish (total estimated 1000lbs) which puts the side crimp at the water surface (9.5" of hull in the water) the boat would not even get on plane, looking at maybe 12 mph. In fact, we hit a "no wake" zone and my buddy said the only difference was the wake... hence the breaking of the wallet.
AFTER is a freaking world of difference, light load I'm steady 31 in deep water, hit 32.2 yesterday but 0-28 is 15 times better, the boat will jump up on plane now instead of a gradual climb. The Mikuni's idle and pick up is flawless and hands down beats the factory carb that was on it. The biggest gain is load carrying. We had a few guys meet up for a ride and we got 6 (1200lbs+) in my boat to see what it would do. I was really only looking for it to get on plane but we got it up to 27 running in lillies, way more than I expected. There were a few other boats with mods that recieved the same test run and even one with a cam and they didn't perform quite as well, most were in the 20-24 range and it seemed to me it took longer for them to get there.
So, I am more than happy with my decision and comparing to other boats I don't see where I will have the need for a cam because this thing has come alive thanks to Cody.

Re: SETX Performance PD Mod Review
I now have had the time to put a few hours on this set up. It's seen dry air, humid air, deep water (10' plus ddm) shallow water (bottom scrubbing) light load and heavy load and I can happily say this is the best thing I've done to the rig. This is how they should come from the factory if it were possible. I don't have to think about do I actually need the second gas tank or not, or wondering if an extra person can go bowfishing.
Speeds I have learned differ from day to day. I've hit 32 with a 160 main by self and it was a tad on the lean side so i jumped to a 165, Since the change I've lost top speed to 30 but she runs real smooth and carry's a hell of a load and should be safer on the motor.
I'm pretty sure alot of you didn't believe the original speeds with the boat load of people even with 6 witnesses but I have added 1400 lbs of gear and people bowfishing and still run a steady 25 in deep water (with the 165 and 93 pump gas). For anybody that doubts it, get Cody to set you up and you will be a believer. The little things that he pays attention to really wakes them up.
Once again I recommend custom heads from SETX, they are the shit.

Re: SETX Performance PD Mod Review
awesome story. I am also looking to improve my speeds with a load, but from what I hear the 27 PDs don't offer many modifications bc its a kohler engine. Do you think this guy can do the same with a 27?

Re: SETX Performance PD Mod Review
Hard cranking, mines not too bad, I didn't go with a cam but I can tell you before the mods I could engage the clutch and turn the prop (with the battery unhooked) fairly easy, almost one handed. After the mods is a different story. It's almost as if the stock set up didn't have sparkplugs in compared to the compression after. So I can see how with a cam and good sealed heads it would be harder to crank.
I'm not certain about the 27 Kohler, give Cody a call. Maybe he can work your heads, get you a good carb and an open exhaust.

Re: SETX Performance PD Mod Review
I did a ton of research before modding my motor because I had the same issue with my 35 GTR with heavy loads. I modded the $hit out of the motor and I still have trouble with 4 people and my bowfishing deck and a barrel full of fish... In shallow water Less than 3 feet I have no problem jumping up on plane but these motors will simply not get on plane in deep water with super heavy loads in deep water....A barrel full of fish weighs about 400 pounds...4 people is about 700 pounds...deck is 300 pounds...3 batteries is about 125 pounds...
I'm asking a lot out of a 35 HP (Now probobly closer to 50 HP) so I guess I need to take two less people with me.
The bottom line is that If I had a 75 HP 2 stroke motor on the back I would have no problems...but its a trade off. Duck season I can heap that sucker with 4 guys to the top and in shallow water I can scare everyone but there is a "Threshold" as to what a guy can haul in any form of deep water I dont care what kind of MM motor you have.
After the boat accident I have completely rebuilt the motor with Roller rockers and BPS connecting rods and done a better valve job and porting work and some intake work so I think I may be able to push the load better. We will see. These is no point in me putting the bowfishing deck on this year because the lakes around here are so muddy that you cant even fish with 1600 watts of HPS lighting.
So the real test will be in the spring.
All that blabbing aside I glad to see you are super happy with your motor. 1400 pound load at 27MPH is impressive! I know that CODY came through on getting all of my parts in a timely manner and is a great guy and will help even the Dumbest yankee get his motor back together...I'm proof!
I just got another GTR 35 for a great price and I will be sending the heads to him to do the head work for me. Then I will have two modded GTR 35's and I will not miss another duck season!! lol

Re: SETX Performance PD Mod Review
I too am curious as to what the compression on that motor is. I was told that anything over 200 is a recipe for disaster?? Dont knwo if there is any truth to that but there is a threshold with any mod i'm sure.

Re: SETX Performance PD Mod Review
His numbers don't sound too far off. I've got similar mods but a larger boat, and speeds aren't much less with similar loads. Cody put some pixie dust on my heads too!

Re: SETX Performance PD Mod Review
A guy on the MB website posted compression numbers of 240 & 180-190 (leaky intake valves). I don't foresee it holding together very long.

Same Mods bigger boat and heavier everyday loads here, damn near same performance! Keep foolin' around or call Cody. 245.JPG Pic by Will, he may have been catchin' me by 2/10ths mph... 242.JPG This vs Marshmellow only difference

Re: SETX Performance PD Mod Review
Will with your setup, you can burn a 7000 to 28mph, it may get you on topend and it may not but it won't be by much if it does. Thats what alot of people don't understand when doing mods, with the way your motor is setup you can hang with a 7000 all day long, but i can guarantee you, your motor will be with you alot longer.
