 Belt drive reliability
I'm new to MM thing and trying to decide which make to go with. Anyone have any problems with toothed belt drive motor jumping tooth gear and damaging or breaking belt, stranding you? Are these hard to change in the field if you had to?
How does the GTR do with the belt drive in reverse mud? Any belt related issues under a heavy load like that?
Thanks for your advice.

 Re: Belt drive reliability
I broke a belt but it was an unusual circumstance, the motor/belt only had a few hours on it and i hit a big blind that was submerged. We went airborn and when we hit the water again the belt was broke.Since then I've put nearly 300 hours on the motor without any belt problems. So I think that I had a bad belt because I've hit shit alot harder since without any issues
I've had the boat loaded to the gills with people and gear in the mud grinding out and have never had the belt jump teeth in forward or reverse.
I do not carry an extra belt but yes you could do a belt change in the field.

 Re: Belt drive reliability
Ifin' the belts were anykind of a regular issue .... we would be hearin' 'bout 'em on a mo regular basis. Thangs can/do break ..... but I wouldn't let that bother me on makin' a purchace dissission.

 Re: Belt drive reliability
I've hit stuff with my GTR and actually stopped the prop. Never had any prob with the belt. Same in reverse during frogging. Running thru stumps, sticks, cypress knees and no probs

 Re: Belt drive reliability
HGell goes to show you. This weekend out in the basin. I was running the Phillips canal and a cut had mud in it. I ran it and on my way out i was trying to avoid the underwarter pipeline. Well i got pushed into the pipeline by a stump. I took a small chunk out of my prop. That goes to show you the abuse these MM's take. As for the chunk from prop it hasn't affected performance so im not gonna worry about it.

 Re: Belt drive reliability
Many of them are Kevlar reinforced- belt breaking is mostly a thing of the past. It takes a big hit to do it. There is yearly maintenance to check the belt tension on them though.
I hit a rock and did this to my repitched prop (>3/8" thick stainless), belt was fine.

 Re: Belt drive reliability
Those belts are pretty reliable. They use em on ultralight airplanes and motorcycles for the same reason, that being to absorb shock to prevent internal engine damage or damage to other expensive parts associated with the drive. I think they are strong enough for a mm.

 Re: Belt drive reliability
i don't have any cum on my chin, so i'll say this....
go look in gatortails yard, there is a pile of motors to be fixed. go look in pd's yard and see the same thing. same with godevil and mudbuddy. same with outboard dealers and car dealerships.
they all break. and ur probly gonna break sumthing on either one before u break a gear or a belt, when these break it's usually a complication from another series of problems. if u are scared of breaking sumthing, DO NOT BUY A MUDMOTOR, go buy a pocketpussy and stay in ur house. cause in the real world everything eventually will break.
