Post Re: DU
DU is a Catch 22 if you will. Yes they have done some great work and will continue to do so. We would be chit out of luck without them. Its not perfect but we have few choices IMO. My take on the discontent with DU by most folks (including me) comes from their work and funds spent on the private lands and clubs, places we could never hunt but do get hunted by a select few. Or the owner leases the property or makes money off of pay hunts. We hear every year of the potential of more loss in the breeding grounds due to lack of fundng. I don't hunt the breeding or wintering grounds but would much rather see the money funnled to those 2 areas. Only thing that makes my hunting better is bird numbers. With the comercialization of waterfowl hunting it seems that what falls in between along the migration route could stand on its own or be left up to the individual states. Then again these same private land owners do contribute as well. There is no way to make everyone happy.

I know that I'm just an uneducated boy from south La. wit a public school edumacation, but I just went to the DU Canada site and I would like everyone to go and compare the DUC and our DU site and tell me the difference.Let me help out my poor ignorant La. brothers who may not be able to find that site, there is nothing about hunting on there you have to go look for it.

I know what DU has done and where would the ducks be without them, who knows. They are doing what ever they can to get money for the ducks.
My question is, if we have another big cut like we had in the late 80's and early 90's are they going to change their marketing here as well?

Oh and I'm not just a basher I'm a bronze sponsor with the pins to prove it

Post Re: DU
so should the real argument be should DU spend money on public or private huntable land? My thoughts on private habitat improvements sponsored by DU would be that on some projects, there is no net gain. I have seen state money spent in SC that literally only benefited the private land owners where the projects were done. No net gain and possibly a loss to duck population because of it. I support DU and DW and adopt a pothole each year. Not trying to start arguments, just dialogue on the subject.

bubby, that's the same shit that goes on here. Some guy on the committee pulls a favor for a landowner to get the pond built, then the committee guys get to hunt it. They pat each other on the back and write and article and then pound ducks on it all season.
Hell, we got a state stamp a few years back and DU got 1/2 of the funds from that and built......three shoot em up ponds. Guys are talking about wintering habitat and rest water. Yeah, no water in that CHESAPEAKE BAY a few miles over there. Then, when they get called on it, they start in with the party line.
Again, not bashing what DU does for the PPR and waterfowl as a whole, just how some local jackassed affiliated with DU screwed some stuff up here in VA.

Post Re: DU
you see it on the DU shows all the time where they show some habitat project on somebody's private land and the landowners and the host wailing away on the ducks. there was no net gain in the duck population, just made that guys hunting land better. Go ahead and Keep the money up north. At least a few ducks might come our way.

Alot of the work DU does on private lands are in joint with our agencies. For example, in TX, I know some guys who have set aside some acreage as CRP with the state and fed governments and obviously there is some kind of tax benefit assocaited with this. Then where DU comes into the equation is on the ground work like surveying off wetlands and assitting with water control features. TPWD will also assit the landowner with management advice. From what I have gathered, DU never does anything solely on a particular private landowners peice of property for that guys benefit.

Although I support DU, Delta, SCI, WWA and the NRA, a few years back I questioned if I would ever give a dime to DU again.

See a very close friend of mine who was dedicated to hunting and habitat restoration passed away in 02.

When Mike passed we began a Memorial Fishing Derby and since 2003 we have dispersed around $15,000 dollars to local sportsman clubs for habitat projects and youth hunting programs.

What ticked us off in regards to DU was they were the first ones we approached to offer a donation for a local project backed by DU and USFWS and funded with monies from each along with private donations. That year we took in around $3600 and we wanted it to go to this project to help with the costs of building the project which was around 60% completed.

When the local DU rep was contacted he stated, "I cannot guarantee your contribution will be used there, but it would be put to good use elsewhere". Not exactly the answer we were looking for and keep in mind that the project wasn't done at that time and funds were limited to even finish it.

This project's sole purpose is for water control during the spring floods and nesting, it encompasses approx 150 acres. Also it is closed to hunting and not privately owned.

It no longer produces ducks, the USFWS doesn't maintain a decent water level and every year the cut the vegetation off. Previously there was muskrat houses and nest production was very prevalent. The former owner couldn't get a tractor into it to work it, now you could walk barefoot on 75% of it and not get your feet wet.

DU does do a lot of great things, but they also need to keep track on what happens when they turn things over to other agencies or private land owners.
