Post Looking for a training partner
Guys Im trying to self train my first retriever. Ive had her close to a month and a half now, shes 4.5 months old now. She new nothing when I got her but was retrieving some. In the time Ive had her Ive made some progress with her. Some basic ob and starting water retrieves. I feel like weve hit a rough spot. She has always brought the dummies right back to me but has lately been trying to keep it when she brings it to me and very occasionally wanting to play keep away. I don't indulge her and always somehow get her to bring it to me. Ive started trying to get her some off leash time during training and Im thinking this may be the culprit of the problem. Starting tomorrow all training will resume on leash. But Im looking for a training partner in the morgan city area. Someone who has trained a dog in the past or who is currently training a pup. Have been told by multiple people its easier when you have someone to point out what your doing wrong and Im very open to criticism. I really want to get this dog trained right and want to avoid needing to send her to school if I can.

I like training w/other people it seems to motivate the dogs better. Also believe it or not dogs get jealous and try to outperform eachother thus motivating them

Why don't you ask advice from trainers in your area. Most trainers don't mind giving advice. Just my advice I'd waite later on for the water retrieves , focus on obedience first. I would not do very much retrieving till your pup has his obedience down. Stick with 10 to 15 min sessions. Pup especially don't keep their focus very long . Once again I'm no expert just some advice of my own . Good luck with ur pup

I have a 5 month old lab and I've been in touch with a trainer that has been giving great advice. X2 on the ob first. If you are always playing fetch the dog will think its a game. Get the basic ob down then start on fetch. I ruined a dog by playin to much, I'm like hernja. Not an expert but just going by others have told.

Try looking for clubs in your area, like the others said obedience is the key from the start. Make sure its also consistent, timing is everything.i don't take my dogs off leash or long line until its consistent, a dog will play you believe it or not.take your time your dog is in kindergarten so don't try to enroll him in highschool just yet. Happy bumpers are good but leave it at that, put in a good training schedule. Take on one command at a time and be patient!! Don't rush it.

Most dogs go through that phase (and usually around that time period). Wolters refers to it as their "teenage years".

Things you can try:

-wade into the water so that if she wants to play keep away, she'll have to tread water.

-put a check cord (~2o' or so) on her and let her drag it. When she get's close, you can step on the cord and gently pull her in (I had to do this with my male). I'm training another pup right now and he's in this phase: every retrieving session I just need to gently tug the check cord once--after that he brings it back flawlessly, but then the next day he needs that one reminder.

-squat down turn your back on her if she's playing keep away--like you're ignoring her.

Remember to keep it fun and positive at these early stages.

I'm not buying it. The dog knows its a command. He knows its a command if j say sit, just like he knows ima kick him n the rear leg if he chooses not to

Thanks for the advice guys. We've been working on obedience more and she's getting better. I've done some searching for clubs but most that I found were at least an hour away. Anyone know of any clubs near Morgan city that aren't totally focused on competitions like most of the ones I've found.

Everybody is right bout the obedience. Work on sit here heal and drill it. Short 10-15 min sessions. If it wants to run- do not chase!

I went through what u r, everyone does. When drake wouldn't come, I immediately picked him up. Session over.
2 days later he was happy to play by the rules. Later he did it again bout 1 yr, brought the choke chain back out and worked him through it.

Just b sure to have fun, the dog is a baby right now. Obedience, obedience

My strongest advice- b sure to collar condition, and b sure y'all r both ready for it. Way too early now

Remember this- u can only correct ur dog if it knows what u want of it, and if it doesn't know that's ur fault- not his

Yes a forced dog should retreive any time no matter what distractions or obstacles in the way

I know exactly what force fetching is, as well as the extensive process. By no means ami saying dontforcefetch ur pups. And I understand the high pressure situations. All I'm saying is u can say what u want, I haven't had that problem.
