Post Any Vets here to answer questions
I brought my year and a half old lab to the vet for his yearly check up today. Everything went good except when it came down to the heartworm test. The thing that gets me is that he didn't have any small heartworms in his blood stream but my vet said he tested positive for adult earthworms. How is this possible Idk if there is something I'm not gettin. I would like to hear ur thoughts on this matter. And also he has been on a heartworm preventive since he was a pup an never missed a pill.

Monthly HW medicine does not kill adult HWs. It kills the microfalaria (baby HWs). To kill adults you must treat with imiticide. Which is an injection given by the vet in the muscle next to the spine.

Well first of all there is a thread on this and obviously what u r giving doesn't have a strong enough dosage to kill off like it advertises and second I have never seen earthworms in a dog;)

What prevenative are you giving? Where are you located? Good information to help those on the same prevenative and the area will give us an idea of where mosquitos are that are carrying the disease. We have another topic going on this same issue.

Keep him on hw preventative. Adults only live 3-5 years and will die and disappear quickly. No big deal. Don't sweat it.

At a year and a half old and since the occult test was neg, they can't be THAT bad, hence why I told him what I did. New worms don't grow over night. There's no micro filaria he said. Pay attention, grasshoppa

Ivomec is the only thing that works and doesn't have problems

He isn't a vet nor am I nor are you. But he and I both have immediate family who are and have been doing it for 35yrs ++. No medicine is 100% effective all the time. It's called efficacy of a medication and its dependent on a multitude of factors.

If the trifexa pill for example failed I've seen it happen before b/c person used 100lb pill on 50lb dog by using half the pill. Problem is half the pill is not necessarily Half the dose. This it's efficacy was poor.
Ivomec ain't perfect either.

Ur vet isn't gonna inform u to do so that's why he has u on pro heart now so like everyone else has said they have used all these things and found them to not work me personally I would give half a dose for the first month and make sure he doesn't have any reaction from it and if everything is ok I would start giving him the full dose after that every month and I have done it and never had problems but that's me

Y'all think if I squirt some ivermectin on my tomato plants would the worms be killed?

Don't argue with stupidity, it will only drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
