I purchased a 10hp Dixie in the twilight of Ben’s days. It was every bit the engineering and business disaster that has been so well documented. Earlier this year I sent my motor back under warranty and tried to work with Mike. While it started off positive, and he made some upgrades, in the end engineering and quality continue to be lacking. I went as far as to purchase a newer design tail shaft assembly from Mike after my motor came back and the original still had bearing and seal issues. When it arrived there were numerous concerns so I sent him detailed photos of the issues. When I questioned him too much about the poor design and craftsmanship he offered me my money back if I returned the unit, which would have left me with nothing. Then, he stopped taking my calls and responding to emails.

Once I realized I was on my own, the Fixie Mud Motor was born. With my 3D template I started reworking the frame. I reworked the tilt, pivot, trim-screw, tiller handle, drain, transom screws, and belt box cover. I also internally reinforced the tail side of the belt box and added some additional fasteners. The belt drive, upgraded by Mike, consists of a Panther Plus 1120-8MPT-30 with a Dodge P22-8M-30 pulley on the top and a P30-8M-30 on the bottom.

The new tail shaft assembly from Mike was scrap with the exception of the shaft itself. To gain some extra length, I had upgraded to a modified 23hp assembly with a 7/8” diameter on the belt end. After a little spray weld and some grinding to correct some poor machining, I fit the shaft in a new, totally redesigned, tail. The new tail not only has a properly designed bearing package but also is a true sealed unit with o-rings, a belt side shaft seal, and twin shaft seals on the prop end. The prop is currently a 9x9 Hill.

While I was at it, I upgraded the engine, a Home Depot Lifan 420cc with an 18 amp charging system and electric start. Among other things, I added the following:
• ARC billet rod
• NR Racing 280 torque cam
• HD pushrods
• 1.3:1 rockers
• Vegas Carts ported head milled .050” with oversize SS valves & HD springs
• NR racing bored Honda carb (24mm)
• Robertson’s Torque Tube header

While I only have a few hours on it I can say one thing, Spooky! My Fixie now tips the scales at 128 lbs. and I have it mounted on a 1436 G3. On GPS it topped out at 26.8 mph with 120 lbs. of dog and junk in the bow and me in the back at 190 lbs. I am only getting it to spin up to 4700-4800 rpm so a prop change is in order once I get things broken in a bit, but thus far I am very pleased. I am not sure if it is the increased power, or the upgrade from a 15” to a 27” shaft, but it behaves much better than the original. The original was very sensitive to weight distribution and the prop would blow out if things were not just right, the new Fixie Mud Motor does not seem to care! In fact, the only problem I have now is finding a muffler that will stay attached (my Supertrapp decided to go swimming today, again)!

Did you have to run a fuel pump running the remote fuel set-up? What speeds were you getting before you did the mods?
