sputtering and no rpms under load
I have a 36pd that I just put a k&n air filter on. Here recently it has been backfireing and idleing rough then today going back to the ramp it cuts out and will not rev up to wide open. If I put it in neutral it will rev up all the way to 4200. What gives? WTF?? Earlier I chalked it up to back gas but now I am not so sure. I had put seafoam and marine stabil in this bad gas.

Get rid of the suspect fuel and see how it runs.

Re: sputtering and no rpms under load
If not fuel related...
It could be runing on only one cylinder....
Try removing one plug wire at a time while running - if you get no change when one is removed and engine dies when other one is removed...
Cylinder where there is no change is mis-firing or not firing at all...

It ran fine after I changed the gas and plugs. It backfire one time and ran good. I kinda think it had some trash in it. Please explain the valve lash
