 mallard / black duck cross Check out the halfiei shot yesterday, going to get him mounted, don't see many like this . Pretty sure it's mallard/ black cross

Re: mallard / black duck cross I hope I am wrong, but that looks like an immature mallard drake. He might have a touch of the tar brush, but plumage doesn't seem finished. We shot more this year like that than years past. I shot a mallard hen cross black. Looked just like a mallard hen, speculum and all, but olive bill

Re: mallard / black duck cross He definitely looks like he has something going on. I am just wary of using curls as immature drakes commonly don't have curls.

Re: mallard / black duck cross I think several people have also commented on the amount of immature birds this year. I hadn't given much thought to birds renesting. I just thought it had more to do with early cold snap we had. Learn something new everyday.

Re: mallard / black duck cross Looks like mallard/wigeon to me, notice the wigeon colored feathers around the neck/chest and eye stripe. None the less awesome bird.

Re: mallard / black duck cross If you can take a pic with the wing outstretched - the scapular feathers will determine if mature or not based on if pointed or more rounded.
Option 1 its a young drake
Option 2- i want to say it looks more mallard/ wigeon cross but its a big duck!
