 Another Opinion
My Son is Country as you can get. We live in Texas. My Son's only choice for a Senior School trip is a week in New York City. Of course I can not go with him and I do not want him going. My wife and I are at odds over this. If something were to happen he is beyond my reach in New York. I think the School is unreasonable in offering a School Trip that will cost each student thousands of dollars taking them some place where I don't want him to go. Needless to say I really do not totally trust any of the Teachers to keep him safe or out of trouble. I have no love for big cities otherwise I would move to one. Taking a bunch of Country kids to New York city is just asking for trouble. Opinions please

I'd offer him half the money for the trip if he doesn't go. It would be worth it to both of y'all.

 Re: Another Opinion
No go cups.
You are safer in Times Square than in rural Texas.
Nobody drives so no drunk drivers.
It's not bad at all, in fact it's actually very safe and exciting.

Not on my to do list. Either prepare him and let him know what to do in a jam "just in case". Or keep him home. I'd let him decide for himself. He's going to be making a lot of his own decisions starting real soon. Best case is he asks for your guidance.

 Re: Another Opinion
I've been up there several times. There is way more trouble to get into in cancan or panama city and such. I would offer advise to e dang sure where the subway is going before you get on it. We got on one and ended up in a shady part of town and had to wait for another train for about 30 minutes. I feel way more comfortable walking through times square at night as opposed to Atlanta during the day.

Let him make his own mind up on the matter, senior trip only comes around once. If your worried about him, just get a pair of brass knuckles and a remind him to wear his rain jacket if ya know what I mean!

 Re: Another Opinion
If he is going with a group, I am sure he will be as safe as he is driving the roads here, if not more safe. I have gone twice, I felt safe both times even on the subway. I think that everyone should go once to see Lady Liberty and now the 9-11 memorial.
But I hated NYC. I do not like going to shows. I did not like the food.
But I did go up to West Point, and that was absolutely breath taking. Just a beautiful place along the Hudson and everywhere around it. I have no need to ever go again. I have traveled a good bit--and NYC is just not all that great. The rest of the state is pretty.

 Re: Another Opinion
Talk to him about it, let him make the decision, if his buddies are going he might feel a little left out... If you are totally against it suggest that you two take a father son hunting trip or maybe get some of his buddies and their dads to go with you guys and make it a good time while everyone is on the New York trip?

 Re: Another Opinion
I used to travel to headquarters for work up there... It was cool to see for like a minute. Bunch of queers walking around holding hands and shit in Time Square. After the first time going up I basically always worked most the day, grabbed something to eat and took it back to the hotel, repeated until trip was over.
If your kid doesn't end up going, he ain't missing much.

 Re: Another Opinion
NYC isn't the worst place...but its over hyped, over priced. New Yorkers hate tourists groups, because they walk in large groups blocking the sidewalk, while they look in windows and try to figure out where they are and where they need to go.

 Re: Another Opinion
NYC is not that bad as long as he goes where he should be going...the tourist stuff. Empire State Building, Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty, Broadway Shows, Times Square, 9/11 Memorial, etc. If he wants to get into the Statue of Liberty crown area, better start trying to get tickets, now! From NYC, he is an hour train ride to Philly, hour and a half to DC. Lots of really great stuff to see if he has the time. Book a Grayline Bus Tour. The tour goes everywhere as a group, don't have to worry about parking and driving...and you get to see all the sites....the only way to tour big cities.
There is plenty to do and see and it will be a great experience for him. Don't be an overprotective, overbearing, sheltering type parent. Give him guidance and let him build his own experience of the place. Like somebody else mentioned, probably stand to get in more trouble at a FL beach!

 Re: Another Opinion
NYC is great. Worked in and out of there for 18 years. My inlaws live in The Village and I still go up there a couple times a year.
Manhattan is OK. I walk around anywhere with my young kids. Ride subway to wherever I need to go.
You can eat any pretty much any kids of food you want from many cultures around the world. To many museums to count or visit in one week. Museum of Natural History is a not to miss visit. Catch a Broadway Show. Make sure and pass through China Town. He can buy knock off Sunglasses and shit to bring home.
Endless possibilities for sightseeing.

 Re: Another Opinion
I grew up in a small town (125 people). I don't like big cities but I have been to NYC. I felt safe the whole time I was there seeing the sights and getting a chuckle out of some of the stuff you see on the streets. It was neat for a few days but after that I wanted out of the concrete jungle. Most tours keep you well away from the shady part of town. New Yorkers are rude but if you just ignore them I think that pissed them off more.

 Re: Another Opinion
My daughter was in a similar situation. I just told her I would rather the money went to her college education, a car, or anything else she wanted. She stayed home and used the money for college. She is very academic so this may not work for your son. It helped she didn't really want to go anyway.
Why not offer him a hunting trip or something instead?

 Re: Another Opinion
My daughter lives two blocks off of Times Square. I'll give you her number if you or your child need to call someone in an emergency.
BTW, she's 25 years old and has lived in Manhattan since the age of 18 and has never been accosted, mugged, robbed or experienced any other crime against person or property. I was more concerned about her while she was in high school here in Lafayette, LA than I was about her ever being in Manhattan.

Let him go. He will appreciate the country even more when he comes home. .... Or maybe just the opposite. Either way, a good life lesson.

 Re: Another Opinion
Update My son and his Buddies as well as Girlfriend already decided they don't want to go. It was not just NYC that I objected too, it was the long distance.
I got together with some of the other Parents and we are planning a Bonfire, Dance, and Karaoke party while the rest are gone. As it looks there will be very few going.
Another thing that burned me was the price. This was going to cost a minimum of $2000 and the Kids had no vote on where they wanted to go.

Take him hunt bunnies at the bunny ranch. It would definitely be the best senior trip ever. All his friends would envy him:lol:

 Re: Another Opinion
Totally agree with the bunny ranch. My dad and I have been around the world fishing. He was the best wingman ever. He is the reason that I was getting laid on these trips. Kind of ackward sometimes but. It worked. I think more dads should be like this. My neighbor's son is turning 21 in march. The kid has never even kissed a girl. The dad is a tool. I told the mom that me and a few neighbors are taking him out to the sttrip club and going to get him laid. She was so happy. She hugged me and later brought over chicken marsala. The wife said "why is Judy being so nice". I have no clue.
