Post Komado Joe vs. BGE
Capt. Jon or any of you other BGE fans,

Have any of you seen these Komado Joe's? I was browsing the local BGE dealer today because its almost time for a new grill and was talking to the dealer about them. He showed me his BGE's he has in stock and then started showing me the Komado Joe. I am not very familiar with either except for what I have read on here from you guys about the BGE. He was definatly a bigger fan of the Komado saying that I would get a better bang for my buck. He is selling the Komado Joe with stand side tables and cover for 799. I may be leaving something out, but it definatly seemed like a better deal. He also claims they are just as good if not better than the BGE because of its grill with a trap door for adding coals, the construction of the stand, bigger thermometer and parts made with painted galvanized steel instead of regular painted steel on the bge. He also claimed it was built tighter which made it more efficient and easier to keep an exact temp.

Anyway, can any of yall give me any pros or cons to the Komado over the BGE? I am wondering if he is just making more money on the Komado or if it is really a better deal. Whats your opinions?

What size for $799? Just bought a medium BGE with nest, plate setter, bag of charcoal, starters, vertical turkey roaster, ashtool, and vee rack all for $600.
Maybe the seller was pushing the Komado because he made more markup or he got a better deal. Then maybe again, BGE dealers push BGE's over Komado's for same reason.

Was wondering what about the deal I got, how does it compare with what you guys are seeing on mediums?

I believe the komado is = to a large bge. Not 100% on that but I am pretty sure. I know komado only makes one size.

You should be able to find a large BGE with nest, shelves & accessories in the $700-$800 range. I'm thinking that you are probably correct about him making more of a profit on the other brand. I've not heard of it, but there seems to be quite a bit of copies hitting the market recently.

Let's see -- his sales points were:
Trap door grill --- really? what a useless gimick. I've cooked butts on my egg for 26 hours and still had enough coals to cook a couple of steaks the next day. I HIGHLY doubt that you will ever need to cook past 26 hours. I have never needed to add coals during a cook.
Construction of the stand --- OK, this one is a possible maybe. I have the rolling nest under my BGE because I keep it in a storage building and roll it out onto the back driveway to cook. Yeah, I'm sure that it could be a bit more robust, but I have never had a problem with mine at all. It serves its purpose well. Anything more would be overkill in my book.
Painted Galvanized steel -- again, I don't see that as an issue. It's not like it is getting scuffed or abused or anything. I don't live in a saltwater environment, but the first time I saw a BGE, it was on the fighting deck of a sportfishing boat. I didn't notice any rust issues.
Larger thermometer -- come on. That makes it better? I can read my thermometer just fine. As a matter of fact, on my low and slow cooks, I don't use the dome thermometer at all. I have separate ambient temp & meat temp thermometers that I use.
Built tighter --- bullshit. These things are ceramic. They are going to have slight imperfections. All of them. That is why there is a felt gasket on both the upper and lower pieces. This forms the seal. Is he actually claiming that the other brand's felt gasket forms a more-better-tighter seal? He's an idiot.

And while we are on the subject of felt gaskets -- this would be the only downfall I have found with the BGEs. Until recently, the gaskets used had a self-adhesive backing that would not stand up to the high temps used in cooking steaks (750+ degrees). I have replaced several over the years on my own egg. It is easy enough to do, but aggrivating as hell when the gasket lets go right in the middle of cooking steaks. Now, they are using Nomex gaskets without the self-adhesive backing. You attach it with 3M Super 77. That is what I have on my egg now and it seems to be doing the job very well.

If you do decide to go with a BGE, I would recommend that you insist on it having this new Nomex high temp gasket installed from the factory. Otherwise, it will just be a matter of time until you are replacing it (maybe a month, maybe 2 years).

Thanks capt. I am glad I didn't fall for it and buy on the spot. I was close but the more we talked the more I felt as though I was possably being trickedinto something. I am gonna keep shopping around. Maybe some of these places may be a little softer on the prices after Christmas. I originlly thought yall were nuts spending this kind of money on one, but after comparing them to quality traditional grills I guess they aren't so expensive afterall.

I agree with Jon. You should be able to get a large BGE for that price. I think I got mine for around $500 when I purchased, but that has been many moons ago my friend.

$700 was the best deal I could find on a large (included platesetter, but not stand). They've had a price increase fairly recently.

The store I bought it at also carried Primo ceramic cookers

This place also has primo and the grill dome but the primo is outragously priced and the dome is 799 with no accessories, there large bge is 899 without any accessories. Sounds like I just need to shop a little outside of baton rouge.

Good idea on shopping around. Plus, you are not buying this for a Christmas present, so you have time on your side. I'd bet that retailers are holding their prices up thinking that folks are going to be buying them as presents. After the holidays, they will see the remaining stock on the floor and not want to carry the investment until sales pick back up in the spring.

You will have no regrets after buying a bge. I am still using the original gasket on mine. Maybe I need another one but right now as we speak I got a boston butt smelling good.
I agree totally with the Captn on the comparison. There is BGE and then there is the others. Randy

got mine at an egg demo.... was at a hardware store the week before it and saw the sign for large with nest, shelves (mates) and bag of lump for 674.99 if they got to use it for the one day demo... i actually got to see it shiny and clean .. they put my name on it and it's the same one i got a week later.. for the savings they could have kept it another seven days and then they'd have owed me money... i believe the large retail without any discounts is 799 and the nest 150 with the shelves another 150 give or take... my memory on the exact prices is fuzzy but with tax i figured i saved over 300 on the setup... i

so bottom line... look for a planned egg demo and see if their eggs are presold...

I stopped a car this morning for speeding and its license plate was 411BGE What do you think the odds of that are. It was a general Indiana plate and not a personlized one.
