Post What would you do? I need help with this one.
I just had a new 1848 hull built for my PD36 and it looked great. A friend of mine that runs a local company told me that if I supplied the paint they would blast and paint it for me. Well I go there today to learn that when it was blasted apparently the pressure was to high or the blasting was done too close and now both sides of the boat looks like rolling hills. My friend the boss of the company is hunting and does not know this yet. How do I approach this with him?

That sux. Depends on how good a friend he is. He will let you know by the decission he makes when he sees it would be my guess. Dont know why you would blast a new bare aluminum hull to begin with.

If you don't lightly blast a new hull the paint doesnt hold very well.

Poker my boat is a PD rig they acid wash and paint. my paint job had aluminum showing on the inside walls from a gas tank touching it while riding for 3 or 4 hours. Now there's your bullshit!!!!!! There is no fukin way a paintjob is supposed to come off that damn easy!!

It was a red plastic gas can that took my paint off the side, and after that day i noticed places all over where something would be sitting the paint would be rubbing off. That was my reason for the blasting and repaint. I would recomend a walnut shell blast or a really fine glass blast on a new aluminum boat before painting. Using really coarse sand and staying in one place to long will cause your aluminum to head up and warp like Tacman's boat did.

Most durable paint job I have seen yet was on a Beavertail hull and they media blast the hull prior to painting with one of the following if I remember correctly, baking soda, corn cob, plastic media or walnut hulls. Sand blasting heats up the metal.

I ran my former hull through a lot of Arkansas timber squeezing it between trees and it held up great. To bad the boat overall wasn't as good as the paint tho.

Walnut is a recomended blasting abrasive for aluminum but most people just try to get away using sand.

How does the bottom look? Hopefully not like the sides! Was he doing this work for free? If so, and he replaces your hull, I hope you guys still remain friends. Not a good situation for either of you. I say who ever was doing the blasting needs a little training and a few docked pay checks to cover a new boat!

Just beat it out then weld up the gunnel solid where it is chain tacked, looks like it only pulled between the tacks. I know that is not what you wanna do to a brand new boat but it may save you a lot of headaches?

Tacmc, was your friend doing this as a favor or were you gonna pay him for this? If it was being done as a favor, I wouldn't expect him to fix it.

Best advice is what the other guys told ya, beat it out and weld it. Sorry to see what happened. Best of luck to you.

BAAA HAAAAAA

If something like this was to happen, Of Course it would be to you... LOL.....

Couple Solutions for you :

#1 Refer to one of my many post that tell people how to paint a boat. Blasting is not part of it.

#2 Build a new boat.

I can tell you one thing they don't sandblast airplanes and the paint holds up just fine.

Sometimes brother-in-law deals don't turn out like they should. Downside is if something comes out of this the boss won't let others help out there friends again. Yet i can't imagine how your gut turned after seeing your new hull lookin like an old hooker. Gonna have to lay it on the ground and get the rubber hammer out. That's the best info i can give you. Might end up losing a friend out of the deal.

Thanks for all the advice. I decided I would rather have a jacked up looking boat than to lose a friend. I will do what I can to make it look a little better and move forward. I can replace the boat, good friends are hard to come by.

Another good one for etching aluminum is regular house hold vinegar. IT cleans and etches the aluminum at the same time!

I made a deal with a buddy to buy me out of a boat for $1,000. (old jon boat that we went 50/50 in on)

Well verbal agreement was reached but a week goes by and he sinks the darn boat. With pressure from me and a payment plan he paid it off were still good friends we still laugh about it but a good friend (TRUE friend) will step up and make it right for both involved. Don't worry about losing a friend, if they run off they weren't really a friend to begin with!

I'm no expert but I'd agree with Dead Animal here and put a weld between the existing welds, that should bring in the warps.

As for sandblasting, the shipyard where I worked at (and every other shipyard in Loreauville) does blast their boats before paint but all they do is "frost" it, basically sweeping to etch the aluminum, not staying on it too long at all. Give the paint a nice surface to stick to.

are you absolutely positive the boat wasn't like that when you dropped it off? don't mean to insult your intelligence or anything, maybe it was built like that from the get-go.

Sorry about the blasting job.

All I did to mine when I bought new; unpainted was clean real well with soap and water. Very light sanding, cleaned it again very well. Acidwashed it, then Primed it with yellow zinc cromate, and then painted. After two years of hard running all I have is the expected scratches and nicks. To be honest the majority of the battle scars come from the damn boat slamming against the launch while I am parking my truck or going get it to pick up, and I do alot of frogging and hunting in flooded cypress. The damn wharfs do most of the scratching.

It's not often but Uncle J is correct on this topic. Once he got home from hunting and saw the boat he called me and told me that he would take care of it. Sportsman Fabrication is ordering the aluminum this week and I should have it in about 3 or 4 weeks. He has to finish 3 other boats then he will start mine. This situation turned out better than I thought it would. Thanks for the advice from everyone.
