 Trolling motor battery placement???
Is there a better placement for a trolling motor battery somewhere other than under an extended front deck?
If possible I'd rather have it out of site to leave the floor open.

i think you want it on site?
you can put it anywhere on your rig, just run cables. I always try and balance the weight - be sure you secure it down.

 Re: Trolling motor battery placement???
If you've got some type of gun box or other box in your boat you could put it there. Other than the extended deck thats about your only option to have it out of site.

 Re: Trolling motor battery placement???
Problem with trying to put it anywhere else (especially farther back in the boat) you have to run larger wire or you won't get full performance out of your TM and tends to run your battery down faster.
I run 12 gauge from Ext deck to plug on front deck and have not heard of any issues.
16 gauge wire is even too small from plug to ext deck

 Re: Trolling motor battery placement???
I put my battery for the TM right next to my cranking battery in the back of the boat. I ran 6# wire under the floor and up to the TM.

 Re: Trolling motor battery placement???
Really the back of boat is best because once get TM on there and a deep cycle battery plus fuel tank starts adding a lot of weight that people don't think about but don't want to spend the extra money on larger wire.

Yeah that 20 ft run was about 45$ for "marine grade" wire plus the terminators and shrink tube.

You can buy 20' 2-gauge jumper cables from Auto Zone for $50.

 Re: Trolling motor battery placement???
Would 6 guage be good for a 12v motor?

 Re: Trolling motor battery placement???
What's the question about being good for the motor?? I think the only reason for the larger gauge wire on longer runs is so you don't loose all your current.

 Re: Trolling motor battery placement???
Depends on how long the run is. You definitely want a larger gauge wire if your making long runs because you will loose current

 Trolling motor battery placement???
You won't lose current, you'll lose voltage which actually will cause the current to increase. Increased current means increased heat. Low voltage and overcurrent issues are bad for everything and a damn good way to start a fire.
Find the max current draw for the device you are trying to run, calculate the length of the run, and use a quality wire one size larger than you need. That's what i'd do.

 Re: Trolling motor battery placement???
So lets say 6 guage spanned about 5' because a put my trollin battery up front under the deck. Would that be good?

 Re: Trolling motor battery placement???
I will probably put it in the bow storage. Now what placement is best? Left, right, center....
