 Cold Weather Preparations
I got fired up when I saw the weather on the news tonight. This sounds like it's going to freeze everything up to the north of us and hopefully send the birds down. I remember a similar freeze in 1999 I think, where we were hunting some fields between Baton Rouge and Lafayette. We broke ice every morning with the pirogue but I will never forget the amount of mallards, it was amazing.
I also remember how cold it was but I didn't care at the time. This time I will be in a boat in the marsh and want to be prepared for the unexpected. I have most things I need like cell phones, vhf, 1 good flare, 3 expired shooting flares, lighters, MRE's, first aid kit, tools, etc. I know our northern folks do this all the time but weather like this doesn't happen a lot down here.
I plan on buying a few insta-logs to keep on the boat for a fire. I would appreciate any other suggestions. I now have a wife, 2 year old twin girls and a large life insurance policy that I would like to keep intact. Just trying to be over-prepared because it's going to be damn cold. Thanks

 Re: Cold Weather Preparations
a change of clothes in a dry bag and a bic lighter are 2 things that can save your life if you get wet.

 Re: Cold Weather Preparations
Seems like you got most of it covered. Except for the change of clothes and a tarp for shelter. I keep a tarp and a set of warm and cold weather clothes along with a couple towels in a drybag under the bow year round. Eating and even starting a fire are great but being able to get and stay dry will be your most immediate concern. So clothes and shelter are a must. I got one of the buddy heaters that I throw in the boat for real cold days. That thing is nice. I have even hung it on a tree next to my bag when wading. Sure is nice to be able to warm hands.

Marine sta-bil in fuel especially if it contains ethanol. The water in the ethanol will freeze and strand you. If you're sure there's no ethanol in it(I wouldn't be surprised we get it without knowing about it), I like seafoam, too. I'm up at our farm in Illinois and it was 0 this morning and even the rivers (IL and MS) are locked up. I'd be out every day for the next week in LA if I had a boat down there. Next year I guess. Good luck

 Re: Cold Weather Preparations
Aint no running nets in crocs and socks. I look like a puff a lump rolling in my silver Catfish Cadillac. I'll be glad when this crap is gone. Forecaster says Snow on thurs and frigid temps after that. I keep asking what kinda temps we got now???
