In order to achieve a strategic goal in negotiations many times decisions must be made that do not sit well on the palate. Take the Paris Peace Accord, for instance, which resulted in the end the Vietnam War, for America at least, and the return of POWs. The US had to "eat crow" on that to achieve the return of our POWs. And, we lied to the South Vietnamese people in failing to support their defense effort with bombing should the North breach the accord, which they did and the rest is history. Our reputation as the peace keeper of the world was seriously damaged by that.

It makes no sense to me that If this soldier's intent was to exit the Army, he would choose to do it by being captured by the Taliban. If that is what happened I would give him the benefit of the doubt and say he may have been suffering from some mental illness induced by combat fatigue. We may find out about what really happened as he is debriefed. But any seasoned attorney would advise him not to speak to anyone.

I fear political leverage will be applied to make this guy into something he is not - just to spin this story, the investigation should shed more light on the story and we'll know more by what direction the Army goes after the investigation.

Seeing this from Robert bergdahl and also hearing his speech at the white house where he ended it with praise for allah and the actions of Bowe around the time he deserted his fellow men. Makes one think they are muslim and possibly taliban sympathizers. He left his post and willfully walked into the enemies arms. He made the decision to be with that he rather be on the side of the terrorist.

Combat fatigue after less than 2 months in country? Really? Dean this guy had a plan and followed through with it... you don't train on an Ak if you don't plan on using one..... you don't denounce your citizenship in order to fight the enemy..... While we are focused on this loser there is a real reason for the trade.... it's political and Bergdahl is just a pawn.... A front.... we will find out we also paid money for his release..... Dguidry, where did you get your facts from regarding a documentary on the unit? I know personnally know some of the BN and BDE leadership at the time, so wondering where this documentary is.

Dguidry, I have 1st hand knowledge of events after the incident AND, two of the former Paratroopers who were killed in missions tied to his disappearance: SSG Murphrey served in my company back in 2003-2004 in Iraq with 1-325 AIR as well as SG Bowen who also served in 1-325 AIR during that timeframe as well. Let's ask their family as well?

Regarding someone else's comment regarding walking off of FOBs as a common occurence? Location of this platoon was not a FOB but rather a combat outpost COP and is NOT a common occurence as what Bergdahl allegedly committed.

Rule number one to stay alive as a captive, especially with Taliban/al queada is to make yourself human and not an object of war. You must try to relate to your captors in any way you can? Especially learn their language and, yes, even profess to adopt their religion.

Geneva Convention rules regarding treatment of captives do not apply to the Taliban or Al Q. They are not a country nor affiliated with any, and I doubt they'd even comply if they were, anyway. The Taliban and Al Q prefer killing their captives. I believe Bergdhal did what he had to do to stay alive. None of us can guarantee how we'd act if we were captured. What he did actually worked for him. Remember his experience as a captive was a solitary one. He had no one else with whom to talk except his captors, for 5 years. Not to make light of this, but if some of you healthy young men were deserted on an island with 5 beautiful French women, I'm pretty sure that after 5 years you'd all be proficient in the language, too.

And, Pas Tout Las, my brother in law said he don't want you around no more because he's now a democrat, too.

If they prefer killing their captives, why did they keep him so long? I'd call bullshit. Everyone agrees he walked out on everyone, but in his first video he says he was "lagging behind in patrol." Everyone also agrees he was not on "patrol." Listen to 1.55 in this video. At 9.10 he says he is "being treated better than a guest in an American household."
