Post freshing up motor
So I think im going to pull my heads off and get them decked 40-50thousands, do a valve job and replace the valves with new stainless valves. port and polish heads and intake. I have already gutted my exhaust and put two outlets on it. I was going to order a cam and lifters but need some opinions on which one to get. Im also going to need to get a governer spring for my motor. Its and 07 gt with no reverse. The motor has never been touched. I was going to leave the stock carb and get a mikuni later when I have some extra money to burn. Has anyone changed jets in stock carb? ect?? I have seen people cut the plate under it.

Guess I just want to get some options from everyone. I don't want to start a damn war with someone bashing someone else, i just want options. Is there anything I should do that's pretty easy and affordable to do while I have the motor apart?

oh yea a good bit. I think im going to get my heads and intake done at a machine shop here and change the valves in them and go with a pvt cam. Im going to cut the plate on top of the carb where the air cleaner is. I will buy me a mikuni when I have some money. Think that should wake it up a good bit. However I did ask and cant find anything on anybody doing any work to the stock carb

you can save a good bit of money of P&P work just knock out the sharp edges and gasket match everything with a dremel and smooth it out with 100 grit sand paper then have a machine shop deck them. Not very tough. i ordered valves and shims from PVT and had a machine shop do the decking total cost parts and labor was about $325.

had a local machine shop deck heads and do a 3 angle job on the valve seats and reinstall springs and valves for 150 for the pair.

if your going to change jets in the stock carb be carefull cuz the might be stuck a little and you need to use a screw driver to take them out unlike a mikuni where they are hex head. I broke one side of the screw driver slot off on one use some PB blaster before you start trying to remove.

another question I had was on the rev limiter. my motor is an older one. there is not rev limiter correct? just the governer? how do I keep from overrevving?

the gov will limit your rpms if you install a cam remove the gov shaft and replace with a bolt. Boat DR sells rev limiters for $140 i believe 4470 - 4670 rpm or 5200 rpm limiters

so when I change the cam I replace the governer shaft with a bolt. At that point there is no more governer its just all feel I guess you should say?? the new rev limiter you put on the motor you replace the bolt with it??

the new rev limiter is electric its 3 wires wired into your harness it cuts out the coils when you hit the specified rpm range of the rev limiter. the bolt just plugs the hole where the shaft was so your not sprayin oil all over the place.

aftermarket cams are typically non governed. PVT has the option for gov and non gov cam for the 23 not sure for the 35. If you are installing a non gov cam then I would remove the gov set up and use an aftermarket rev limiter.

I called calens and was told to leave the governer on it and adjust the screw on the linkage to move the governer up to 4400. im assuming you change the spring on the screw to be able to screw it in more? If you screw the one you have now in too much it will bind up your linkage. Does this sound correct.

Post Re: freshing up motor
anybody have any suggestions of what to do once heads and cam is installed as far as with stock carb and governer? My exhaust has been gutted so that wont need to be done. Im worried about the whole governer deal. One person said to leave in place and add change spring and it will move rev limiter to 4500. some say just screw the screw on the linkage all the way in. One person says take the governer out of the motor and replace with bolt or cut it off. that's where my main confusion is at. I just want to make sure I do it right. I believe as of right now im getting the head and intake work done and buying the dynocam mod 1. I was also going to look for a spacer to put under the stock carb.

run it and jet accordingly. The new stock 35s come with 138, 144 jets. With my 23- .035 decked heads, cam, exhaust and 35 hp carb im jetted almost perfect with a 148,154. The biggest jet offered for briggs 35 hp carb is a 158. All listed options for the governor are fine and will work its all personal preference. Pick one and run your motor like a bat outta hell. you might as well keep your stock set up if you plan on keeping the stock carb.

I am not impressed with fuel mileage after switching to the 35 hp carb and jetting up it burns about an extra half gallon of fuel per hour @ full throttle than the 23 hp carb did.

U can pull your gov out while u have the case open my buddy did it on his with a stock carb u can buy just the limiter from bps for I believe 50$ and it'll rev to 4700.
If u wanna mess with your jets on the stocker I'd drill them to .0625 by hand that's what weve been using and it works pretty good it not a mikuni but helps a lil more

I just read the plugs and they are in the good range a little on the fat side. The 148 looks perfect for no.1 cylinder the 154 is a little fat on no 2 cylinder. This was at 70 degrees. The motor will see temps near or below freezing by the end of season so it will lean out some.

The parts list I found for cub cadet 35 hp had jets listed from 134 up to 158

MB rev limiter I just got from boat dr was $140

been thinking some more about things one could do and I have asked some questions about spacers under the carb well I think I may have a poor mans spacer idea. I noticed people buying aluminum ones. why would you want an aluminum spacer you are getting heat to the carb which in the v8 world is a no no. so I have been thinking of what to make one out of that would seal. Has anyone tried making a spacer out of a plastic/Teflon cutting board and making there own??
