Re: New Hybrid mud motor design
well looks like it would work but, will it be a surface drive or what do you have n mind with that? is the idea the speed of an surface drive and mobility of a longtail? if so i can see how it would be benificial to produce one of them, welp good luck with this!

Re: New Hybrid mud motor design
It looks like a pretty steep u-joint angle. I think I heard the Grand Munchkin say one time that 16 degrees was the magic angle on longtails.

Re: New Hybrid mud motor design
If you want it to run like a surface drive the angle of the bottom shaft would need to be somewhat parallel to the surface or the whole lower unit shortened to bring the prop up to the water level? Curious.

Re: New Hybrid mud motor design
MB has had one in the works for years like that....just ask them....
Seriously though, if you have any better drawings or are serious about this project be careful where you post pics and info or somebody will copy it unless you have a patent already on it.

Re: New Hybrid mud motor design
It might work but i think that, according to your sketch, the prop can't be pushing parallel to the bottom of the boat like that because it would want to pull the motor down until it was trimmed all the way down and the transom stopped it. if you wanted to build it like that you would need some sort of trim to keep the motor up. thats why all long tails and the GDSD have the prop just about perpendicular to the joint that allows the motor to swivel up and down; to avoid the motor from creating upward or downward thrust when driving. just my .02

Re: New Hybrid mud motor design
Are you surface driveing the prop or not?
I can't see how your bracing it real well on my Blackberry but if your just planning to brace the out drive Like a longtail as it appears, it aint never gonna hold up at that angle.
I would aso be concerned about that angle from the crank to the drive shaft , how well it will hold up and what kind of rpm it will take esp when under load

Re: New Hybrid mud motor design
You are creating a huge torque arm with the extending the prop in that manner. The transom bracket will have to be larger than most are today to disipate all of that energy.
I think you are going to have troubles finding a u-joint or a CV joint that will run at those angles for lon periods of time (i.e. thier entire life)
You may want to look in the direction of bevel gears that way you do not need the belt to incorporate the gear reduction. Oh wait, then you will have a PD.
Just kidding,
Keep working on it, you will find something that works.

What is the operating range in respect to angles of the cv and universal joints that you have sourced?

Re: New Hybrid mud motor design
Hopp-
You sound like a total schmuck. Even if you are in engineering school, that doesn't make your idea realistic. And even at that, what school do you go to? Basically it looks like your trying to take a longtail and complicate the design. You said it yourself; If the angle is to severe, you will extend the wheel further back.

Re: New Hybrid mud motor design
I think that the CV idea will work just fine. For you non believers there are CV's out there that are capable of 42 degree operating angles.
