I would like to hear about some peoples positive experiences with mods. Whether it be through gecker, evt, hoyt, or anyone else. We're looking to do some work on both of our pd's.

I'm not lookin for why I shouldn't do mods, or this person sucks. Just lookin to hear from some of the guys who actually have mods, and have had a good experience with them so far.

I know most of these companies have had some type of issues at some point. And some issues are still ongoing. Whether it be, wrong parts, hard to get in touch with, or building ticking time bombs. I'm not looking for more input on these subjects. There is plenty of that info out there already. If you wish to start another thread on how bad so and so is, go for it, but please keep it off this one.

Hoyt at gator tail did mine and he has taken care of me more than I could have ever expected. He was there from problems to simple questions, this is a guy who stands behind his work. The same can be said for the GT shop, its all good.


The only thing that I'm going to say is that the first cam that was installed was great, it pushed the chit out my rig empty or loaded down. But that cam was the ROOT of all evil, and now its gone.

We were leaning towards bolt on stuff that we could do ourselves, without dragging the motor cross country. Carb, intake, exhaust, air filter. Just simple stuff. Not looking to break 40 mph, just handle a load a lil better than they do now. Not completely opposed to letting someone tear in to the motor, just not sure if thats our best option.

After watching the mod scene for years and hearing stories and seeing issues.
the best advice I can give you is this:
1. mikuni carb (EVT or BPS)
2. port and polish heads
3. deck heads (not too extreme)
4. SS valves with 3 angle valve job and shim stock springs
5. SS exhaust
6. maintain your junk

this will give good load carrying ability along with reliability/ longtivity.

someone else can chime in if I'm wrong, but that is what I gather.

Kinda crazy. All the guys on here with mods, and only one good personal experience.

i had damn good experinces while the motor ran, It was the stock parts that gave out on me. Damn Valves!!!!!!!!

I was more interested in the companies performing the mods than the mods themselves. Heard lots of bad stuff about all of em(at least the popular ones). Looking to hear some good things. Hoyt I think is the only one I haven't heard anything bad about. But besides the point. Looking for good experiences with the companies performing the mods.

I do admit I love what a hsr 42 carb does for these engines.

I hate to open a can of bs but i have to put my 2 cents in here.
In the case of the B&S 61 CID motor it is ez to make more torque
& hp than the block can contain with the parts that have come
public from all bilders EVT, MB ,GECKER and so on.
we have found that some block bracing is needed in manny places
to hold things togather over 55hp or so { weding, bigger & better bolts,
ballance work, better gaskets, valves, pistons, rods, carbs, & many more }
may be part of your combo to get the motor you need to do your job!!!
we have payed our dues in this mix of things & have some good info .

I work on cars for a living. Not on motors. Electrical. Car stereos, alarms, video systems. I would like to consider myself mechanically inclined. I also did not just purchase a motor. I've been runnin mine for about two years now. Think I've got it just about figured out.

Na. We're not even looking to do that much. I don't really care about breaking 30 mph. Just looking to be able to haul a load a lil bit better. 30 would be awfully nice, but way outta the budget. Me and my pops each have one and are looking to spend around a grand per motor. We aint goin crazy. At least not yet.

I did mine in stages:

First the high flow stainless exhaust (used old style BPS and then upgraded to the BPS crossover) and K&N air filter.

I installed EVT heads- decked 0.060 (more agressive because I did not plan to do cam) with shimmed springs and valve job. Intake and stock carb setup mods for better air flow, added a carb spacer and MB45 governor spring. Had excellent power increase, top end speed, hole shot, and great throttle response. Added more pitch to my prop to keep the RPM down and was very happy with the setup.

Came across a deal and installed the BPS single Mikuni (HSR42) and gained some more top end and tuning capability for idle, mid range, and top end circuits. Throttle was easier on my hand than pulling that big MB45 governor spring. Used gearing and prop pitch to keep the RPM under the rev limiter.

Never cracked the block but the motor was strong to begin with. 211 hours and its still a runner.

Well from my perspective you could have a ticking time bomb on your engine as well as I did with the stock parts. When I had my mods done with coondick we pulled off my stock heads my #1 head was cracked between the valves all the way up to the valve guides. So I'm not sure how long that would have ran that way. Oh Btw that was at 250 hrs. So all in all I'm glad I did the mods or else I could have blown a stock engine out of warranty.
