 Re: Trot Line Crabbin
It used to be done before traps. Still done in the north east.
You put out trot lines from say 600 to 1200 feet long, must sink to the bottom. They have lines coming off the main just like any trot line. But instead of hooks, they are bungee cord and a loop to pull tight around bait like chicken necks. Trow it out there, set the anchor and pull the line tight, then go put out the other one. We put out 3-600 foot lines today. Check as soon as you run it.
On the boat, you have what is called a prop stick. Just a 2x4 across the back with two up right pieces of 2x4 with a piece of PVC pipe between them. You put your line on it, and run the length of it. It pulls it out the water. You stand there with a dip net and as the crabs come up you scoop them up and the snood (hanging piece) just flips over the pvc pipe. They will let go sometimes before you can get to them. Run the next line.
The beauty of it, you do not have to put out traps, soak for a few days then go and run again. You bring your line with you, after finished you take them and the anchors up and go home. Do not have to worry about people stealing your traps or just your crabs. And it is fast. Some people even have an auto dipper.

 Re: Trot Line Crabbin
Did this in 4 hours. We probably threw back 5 dozens small ones. And some empty ones (pure white apron on them). but I bet we lost 2 dozen Number 1's that fell off or we had too many on the line and could not get to all of them.

 Re: Trot Line Crabbin
That's the way it's done up here. Chicken works and is cheapest/easiest to get but we also use razor clams in bags, salted eel, and bull lips. Anchor goes up to float which goes to a length of chain to keep the line on the bottom then have the same system on the other end. It gets real good in September/October around here. It's not uncommon at all for a commercial guy running 2400'-3000' foot of line to catch 15 to 20 bushels or more. Talk about filling up a boat haha

 Re: Trot Line Crabbin
Get your line baited up then put in a bucket with a lid pour salt on it let it sit for a couple days in the fridge. Doing this causes the meat on the chicken necks to toughen up and they last longer. Get a couple days out of a line vs rebaiting every trip.
