I'm not sure. I got my eye on the lowrance elite 5 hdi. They're on sale. It doesn't show lake contours without a card. My main focus is marking spots and tracking how I got there.
It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.

I have a Garmin 741. They have a chip that is full color satellite imagery of the marsh.... Pretty much all of the Louisiana coast. That chip coupled with the big touchscreen and ease of use is just about perfect. It's a lot of money, but I'd spend it again in a heartbeat.
A lot of folks say Lowrance has the best maps, but they haven't seen that marsh chip that garmin has.

It's basically like a full color Google earth display on a 7" touchscreen. You can see all the broken marsh and little ponds and canals really clear.

Heck yeah. Not trying to hijack. My last fish finder was a grey screen lowrance lcx model. So anything is an upgrade for me

Does anyone have the Garmin echomap dv53? Would this model have the same mapping as the Garmin 741?

I don't think it does. I looked at the screen shots and all the ones I saw look different between the two

Look at Legend Cartography if you are considering a lowrance unit. They have some awesome maps for down there.

Just to be clear, it's not the normal Garmin mapping I like so much, it's a Louisiana marsh chip they sell separately that is so badass...

Re: Best gps for atchafalaya delta and wax lake area
We have a few of the garmin touch screens on some of our tugs and they are defiantly nice units. They have their own wifi network and with the garmin blue chart app I can load track lines and waypoints to my phone and transfer to other units. These units are very user friendly.

Re: Best gps for atchafalaya delta and wax lake area
since you got the lowerance get the standard mapping e-card. watch some of the youtube comparisons and you will see how it compares to the garmins and navionics. blows them away for the waters I hunt http://www.standardmap.com/Louisiana-E-Cards_c_53.html
