Sounds like the valve lash is not correct. What did you set them at? How did you go about setting them?

Re: Gen IV PD 37EFI WOT under 4k RPM's???
They were set by Briggs rep, .005". They're performing a leak down test on it now, and will be hooking up the EFI stuff after and checking it out. Cranked it up behind the shop and was idling at 1200-1300 and jumping all over but motor didn't seem to be increasing or decreasing in speed.

Did you have them measure the rocker movement? Didn't you say one didn't seem to be moving as much as the others?

No, they mentioned that leakdown test would confirm whether there where any issues with valve train. This true?

I've asked them to check rocker lift

I don't think a cam problem would cause idle rpms to jump all around 1200-1500rpms. It just seems very precise that I can't come above certain rpm levels at trim.

Just a thought on CBs air intake leak, I know of a few newer motors came assembled with the intake gaskets installed backwards which would cut air flow. Just another possibility but I'd be worried about that one rocker like CB said.

Re: Gen IV PD 37EFI WOT under 4k RPM's???
To update, put on a worked PD prop by Baggy's some improvement in handling, vibration, tiller torque etc, but no improvement with rpms. Still running at 3800 at best trim. Brought it back to Briggs service center again today and they still aren't able to read the diagnostics. Having a new cable sent in. Now the motor wont turn over just by turning the key, have to give it some gas. Also have to rev it up to shift in gear otherwise will cut off....

I'm sure this is a quick fix, but their hands are kind of are tied until they read diagnostics.

Re: Gen IV PD 37EFI WOT under 4k RPM's???
Checked plugs yesterday saw that cylinder 2 was running real rich, so that may explain lower engine power and inability to hit peak rpms. Any idea what would cause one cylinder to be OK, and the other to run rich?

Re: Gen IV PD 37EFI WOT under 4k RPM's???
Just trying anything man, we messed all with the throttle positioning sensor and got the little tps screw all dialed in. Motor is now running a bit better, not cutting out, no high idle anymore but still cant do better than 3950 or so when on plane. There has been almost a turbo whistle sound since new and I didn't think much of it but I wonder if there could be a leak or blown gasket somewhere.

Re: Gen IV PD 37EFI WOT under 4k RPM's???
Only losers here are the dudes at Briggs, have you ever had to work through an EFI warranty issue with them? It is ridiculous, guys at the shop will get everything all set up to run diagnostics and will then give Briggs a call only to have them bot answer. This guys at the service center are good dudes, they don't have to help me with this. They're the only ones that I could convince to work on a boat motor and they are new to the EFI game as well. I was looking over the Briggs software yesterday and it is BS. It should be able to compare all of the various input from the different sensors and tell you if something is a little out of whack. It basically only will give you all of this raw data or tell you if a sensor is not working. I know it can tell you know but it's obvious that the motor isn't right and everything looks fine on the software.

Re: Gen IV PD 37EFI WOT under 4k RPM's???
This is my third efi ha so insurance is out bc this is what insurance replaced my gen III with after it got hit by some dumbass. Had a lemon the first time and was able to swap out with a whole new motor. PD shouldn't have to do that again here bc their stuff is fine, just need a powerhead.

Re: Gen IV PD 37EFI WOT under 4k RPM's???
what do you mean it's not pro drives problem. They sold you a product that they can't provide you with a servicing dealer. These companies sell these out drives to any swinging dic that has a store front and the ability to be able to buy three or four units. Hardly any of them are Briggs or Kohler certified. As soon as you get up in pro drives face and demand service. It is what it is for you.

Motor is being shipped back to PD. Man, F Briggs. Thanks to KP for taking the lead on getting this fixed, but it is ridiculous that Briggs can't get this serviced through their dealers here.
