I have a Go Devil long tail with a Honda gx690 engine on it. I am having issues with it and looking for any advice or knowledge. Last year the top end of the motor was rebuilt due to gas in the oil which caused some damage. The mechanics couldn't pinpoint a cause and didn't say much else other than give me the money to fix it. Well it's been barely a year and I am having the same issues. Only now I've caught it before any damage occurred.
After doing some reading I've found that other gx690 engines have had similar issues caused by the carburetor. The motor was beginning to smoke a little bit last time out. The next day I checked the oil and it smelled like gas. I took the air filter off and the air intake was full of gas and continuing to fill thru the carb. I've ordered a new carb for the engine hoping it will help solve the problem. Any advice on why or how to fix greatly appreciated!!

What kind of gas tank do you have? Do you store your boat outside?

The new EPA tanks don't vent, they will blow up like a balloon and force gas through the fuel line into your motor. If you do have that type of tank you have a few options - you can install a vented gas cap on your new tank, drill a hole on the existing tank or put a quick disconnect (can cause other issues) and disconnect your fuel line while boat is being stored.

Wasn't that the carb that had a solenoid that wasn't needed and could be replaced with a bolt?

Yes I have the newer tank that doesn't vent. It seems like that could be part of the issue. I was thinking on adding a valve in the fuel line. I store outside so I've been leaving the tank closed. I will definitely look into a different tank or venting mine.

I haven't heard anything about the solenoid being not needed. the replacement carb matches up solenoid and all.

Bet that's part of the issue. I keep mine out in the sun and the tank blows up but I have a quick disconnect on mine to keep that from happening, any fuel line connection can get air leaks and cause issues though. These new EPA tanks are shit.

Here are the causes I would check.

1st-choke stuck causing it to flood.
2nd-cold weather carb/air filter icing up.
3rd-stuck float
4th-1 of the coils cutting out at high rpm causing in burnsd file to pass by rings

I have a gx670 and the you have to watch the air cleaner freezing when it gets down around 25 degrees. Colder is ok and over 35 is ok, but when the air is damp and below freezing keep checking the dipstick to watch for a rise in the level.

from what ive read, the new epa tanks have a white ball under the cap when you open the top. look to see if it has it, if so, poke it with a nail or something and it should make it vent. apparently there is writing on the tank that points this out. i had no clue till about an hour ago. as i am having trouble with my 6gal attwood tank supplying continuous fuel to my GD 13hp predator
