Post Pull starting a 25hp Kohler
So, starter craps out while duck huntin. About 4 miles from the ramp, push pole it half a mile, paddle another half then a nice guy tows me the rest. Question---Anybody ever successfully pull start a 25 Kohler???? And if so, How??? I looked at and tried to figure out a way to wrap a rope on the prop/shaft but couldn't get enough leverage to turn it over. Same problem at the U joint/yoke. Can't get enough leverage to turn the shaft due to the engine compression. Is there an add on pull start for these engines? I've looked online but haven't found anything yet. Have now started to wonder if I could build some kind of hand crank handle that fits over the prop nut? Ideas and thoughts welcome.

When GD first offered the 25 longtails Coco had some emergency start hubs machined up. They are about 6 inches in diameter with a groove around the outside and a notch for the starter rope knot. They are split and bolt around the output shaft between the engine and universal hub. They worked well and were popular up here in Alaska, but he had very little demand elsewhere so he discontinued them. I think they were about a $50 option.

I've started thinking it may be easier to start it by spinning the prop----as in a hand crank type handle----old socket welded to a handle maybe. Something like the old Model T and many old tractors.
