Post Clutch???
We were riding along and I notice smoke pouring out of the plastic clutch/caliper housing on my buddies 2013 GTR. He said that something felt a bit odd, but it was still cruising along at about 30mph. Haven't pulled it apart yet because he is waiting for the plastic housing to cool off. It was melting and very mushy... didn't want to destroy it taking it apart. I just went ahead and towed him the last mile to the ramp. Didn't want to cause any further damage.

Anyone had this happen and have a diagnosis?

not a plastic clutch cover melting??? that can't happen... :) once you get the cover off, it'll be time for pictures so we can help troubleshoot

Yea.... We went and grabbed a late lunch with the wives while the cover resolidified. Then it was time for college football and "fuck it.... I'll look at it tomorrow".

Looks like something moved and cause the planetary housing to rub the caliper.

Check the motor mounting bolts and where the side plates that meet the lower unit. If you squeeze the belt together real hard you may be able to see what is moving. Also check the center bolt that holds the planetary to the motor shaft.

I have seen it hit before but not that bad. When the belt is under load it makes the shaft flex down but it usually won't hit like that unless you hit some stumps or maybe really heavy mud. Check these bolts.

I'd check the crank bolt and the screws inside the planetary, and the caliper bolts.

That gen 2 caliper is notorious for sticking.... and then flexing then rubbing the ring gear housing. Your pads are probably worn at an angle...

Holy Jesus Bluesky, just read through that thread. I can say the belt tension was completely fine. I think it had more to do with the 50lbs of clutches/planetary cantilevering on the rear bearing. Additional power may have helped end it but was definitely not the route cause.

I've heard of a few times this happening. Its not the Normal, But it has happened more than once. The root cause??? Bad crank, The unbalanced weight hanging off the back, the abuse these units see, and many other unseen options. IMO there needs another bearing to support that additional weight that will help alleviate some stress off the PTO.
