Black Death 4400 mods
I tried posting this once and being new to forum I don’t think I did it correctly. I’m running an 18x54 prodigy hull with a bd 4400. Switched to a hammer prop and love it but lost a lot of rpm, for me to hit 4200 my prop is dang near out the water. Mid range and hole shot are much better. I spoke with delta and they recommended putting their heads cam and push rods on it. Just curious what yalls experience is with modding the 4400 and what you recommend based of experience. I’m topping out at 26 with 2 guys in deep water. Also wandering if anyone has change gear ratio jetting with better results. My other consideration was doing a block swap with a dl3 efi motor. I am new to surface drives, this is my first one and will prob never not have one, but they are not common in my area so Info is hard to come by. Thanks in advance for the any info/ recommendation

Re: Black Death 4400 mods
I have a 1751 elite with an HDR4400. I put boat dr heads on it, 308 Peltier cam, voodoo exhaust. It screams now. Power range in the cam is insaine and Andy knows what he’s doing with the headwork. I can turn a hammer to the rev limiter now

Re: Black Death 4400 mods
You already have heads although delta could probably improve them. I would go with a cam.

Re: Black Death 4400 mods
Change gearing and your motor will live longer. Don't go over board. A gear change will give you 200 RPM's maybe a bit more and you will gain 2-3 MPH.

Re: Black Death 4400 mods
Get you that voodoo too....(it sounds like Jesus). Don't think it would make much difference without the other mods, but your rig will sound cool, and that's half the battle

Re: Black Death 4400 mods
What gear ratio do you recommend, I have a q muffler and noise doesn’t bother me but my son is a little guy so I have it on there for him. I think I’ll be ordering a cam soon just was curious if there was anything else. Will I need to re jet?

Re: Black Death 4400 mods
If you arnt worried about the sound, get you a voodoo with the baffle, or without (loud AF), or get you a stainless works (expensive, but good gains as well, as far as exhausts go.

Re: Black Death 4400 mods
That is what I thought, I should say I called the boat dr and the guy I spoke to was very knowledgeable and nice and I’m pretty sure his exact words were, you already have worked heads so I could sell you some but what your spending against what your gaining I don’t think it’s worth the money. Unless I called the wrong place but I called the boat dr I found on fb out of LA. I was leaning towards heads and a cam but wasn’t sure. I did ask the guy I spoke with about changing gear ratio and after I went through his questions he said leave it alone. Also he recommended I do a leak down test and if everything was good don’t change heads

Re: Black Death 4400 mods
The 4400 already has heads and exhaust, a cam will wake it up.Just to be on the safe side do a leakdown on your heads if it has over 30hrs they are probably leaking and need to be recut which your local machine shop can do.

Re: Black Death 4400 mods
26 is slow for that boat/motor/prop combo. I run 26 with two people and gear with a stock 37 all thorough im turning a big blade. I know someone with a 1854 elite with a BD4400 and it runs 29-30 with two people with gear turning a hammer prop, Not sure if the RPM's he is turning.

Re: Black Death 4400 mods

Re: Black Death 4400 mods
Valve job and see if that meets your expectations. Or, valve job and a cam and call it a day.

Re: Black Death 4400 mods
what gears are in it now? if you don't no look at the oil drain plug number on the left of plug is the top gear number on the right is lower gear so like 6 and 7 would be a36 top 47 bottom a bottom gear is only 100 bucks if it has a 47 id put a 50 0r 52 on the bottom each tooth size is good for 200 to 300 rpm.cheapest mode out there in my opinion
