Gator Tail question
I took my gator tail out and I have it on the top pin on an edge 550 both the motor and the boat are tall transom. When I'm on the river or a little cut off the river with 3 guys I couldn't get any speed but as soon as I hit a lake I was going 25 to 28 and rooster tailing like hell but I didn't change anything? Why is that

Re: Gator Tail question
I assume the river is deep water?
And little cut off the river is shallow water?

Re: Gator Tail question
lol. Miller lake is not 6-8ft.
These boats like shallow water. Someone more technical than I can explain lift.
It's much easier to plane a heavy load in shallow water than deep water.
Also you are going against the current in the river / cutoff.

Re: Gator Tail question
More motor, lighter boat, bigger boat etc. That stage 3 I'm selling pushes my 600lb boat with 5 on plane over 20 in deep water. Power can do alot. Bigger boats can too. A 2054 with a stock motor doesn't do super speeds, but totes a load exceptionally well.

Re: Gator Tail question
How much are you asking for the stage 3 and my edge 550 runs great in shallow water but I just want to push better speeds on the river it's only a 23 zero mods what mod would i see increase hole shot and overall speed heads? Carb?

https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?url=ht ... are_type=tI'll let maxxis or will C comment on mod suggestions. Stick to the opinions of whomever you decide to get parts and do the work. Youll be happier and know what to expect. They do the work. I just work on my own and source parts from people like them or Amazon. #CFFITR #TheGhostBoat #whoneedsphysicsihaveamudmotor

Re: Gator Tail question
Stage 1: cam, heads, exhaust, or carb (or efi) heads exhaust Stage 2: add the missing one from above. Stage 3: add internals.
Internals route: Stage 1: internals and cam, exhaust Stage 2: add fueling (carb or efi) Stage 3: add heads.
Those are some basic starting points to give you a frame of reference. For example, I call mine a stage 3, but the headwork I had done doesn't add hardly any compression. The valve work and porting was done to improve flow. Everyone involved with these things have slightly different definitions of the above, but that's a ballpark idea.

Re: Gator Tail question
There's part of your issue. Thanks for asking that question, knee. Never even crossed my mind, but explains it. A 37 stock would solve your issues, more than likely, and 6ou wouldn't want for mods. But I know where a good modded engine that would bolt on easily is for sale.
The mods I described would make that 23 run, but it'll never be a big block. Efi isn't an option that I'm aware of on that engine, though.

Re: Gator Tail question
That's what I was trying to piece together, it wasn't making sense. To make a 23 run you have several options, put tons of money in the motor or tell your friends to get their own rig.

Re: Gator Tail question
Sounds like i need to upgrade the power head I was trying to keep it under 25hp to get into some of the refuges down here but that wont matter going 6 miles an hour with a hunt load

Gator Tail question
Get a 35 and you can do mods and get good hP for about the same price. Heads alone on a 35 will put you at least in line with a stock 35 and headwork is only ~700$
Or get the engine from Russ and you'll have all the power you need.

Re: Gator Tail question
Is this a 15' boat? Not sure of the weight difference between a 23 and 35+ but may want to see if that would be an issue

Re: Gator Tail question
It is a 15 foot but i would think with the load it should balance out the slightly heavier motor

Re: Gator Tail question
I haven't ever run one on a 15' boat so I don't have valuable insight here, is just ask around and see if others have. I'd hate to recommend you go to a big block and spend that money only for it to be too much weight for your hull.

Re: Gator Tail question
Miller lake on a normal river level is probably 2-3ft deep. If you are talking about being there any in the past month it was probably a foot or less... I’ve seen it 10+ft deep and I’ve seen it bone dry. When it’s just right that lake has the best mud around to ride in
The reason you are faster in the lake is because it’s shallow. When you run into shallow water, the water rolls off the bottom of the boat and into the bottom where it kinda pushes back creating lift for the boat.
More lift = less surface area touching water = faster boat.
When your in deep water there’s nothing pushing back on the water rolling off the boat so it just stays sitting deep and has a lot of drag.
