Best oil???
What is the best weight of oil for these motors? Read something where synthetic 5w-30 is good for -20 too 100 Degrees. Can you run Royal Purple in these engines? Was leaning towards the synthetic high performance royal Purple or the amsoil? Any thoughts?

Re: Best oil???
I run Amsoil 4t Briggs Approved oil for cart racing. It is a little high think 8 or 9 bucks a quart with preferred membership. However, remember it just a lawn mower engine, but again to each their own.

Re: Best oil???
Briggs says 5-30 has the widest temp ranges. You can run royal purple, it's expensive, but there are others just as good for much cheaper. I would get any decent 5-30 and not think twice about it. My gravely lawnmower gets motor craft and I've never had an issue.

5W-30, whatever brand puts your mind at ease. Ton more to worry about with these Briggs than the oil brand.

Re: Best oil???
I use Mobil 1 5w-30 never had a prob. But I do have an additive question....
Did a search and came up with nothing... sooo..
Does anyone have any experience or use the "HotShot's" FR3 Friction Reducer oil additive? Does anyone use this in their mudmotors... I few of my buddies use it in their diesel trucks and gas trucks as well.... they swear by it...????

Re: Best oil???
Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic 5w-40 because it gets stupid hot in Texas too. I use it in everything..mowers, generators, etc.
I don't use any additives because I'm not a chemist. Most engine manufacturers advise no additives, of course they're selling engines not additives. There's always a new miracle additive coming along every few years, then disappears. If it was as good as they claimed, one of the oil companies would use it and have one heck of advantage.

Re: Best oil???
This question comes up, in various forms, fairly regularly. Briggs doesn't want to deal with warranty issues, and doesn't want to lose customers. They recommend an oil. It's been proven a stock Briggs will hit 2k hours on that oil with regular oil changes. Why reinvent the wheel? If you're running more rpms than it's designed around because of mods, then run a high zinc oil that's been proven to work with these types of engines. The amsoil (don't remember which one), rotella (I think it's the t6 that has it), valvoline vr1 all have a decent zinc package if you want to spend more on oil. Stop over thinking it. A tiny fraction of these things has ever failed because of choice of oil, and it was likely because it was just too thick in the cold one too many times and that guy had always run thicker oil in his vehicles and ignored the manufacturer's recommendation. Typically, a failure due to oil is due to just not changing it or the oil pump dying (which shouldn't be a worry).

Re: Best oil???
Even the Briggs oil has an older style api and more zinc then most because it's not an automotive oil.

2 quarts of any oil is better than no oil.

Re: Best oil???
I am currently running Amsoil signature series 5W-30, since it has a wide temp range and it gets really cold up here. I have had good luck with it. Since I am cracking my case and adding a cam, I figured that I would switch to the Amsoil 4T. I looked at a few older threads and based on Amsoil description for intended use and my discussion with their Tech team, it should good fit. Yeah its pricy, but isn't this whole damn game...yeah...its a lawnmower engine, but why not roll with the best. To each their own.

Re: Best oil???
Errbody says it's just a lawnmower until it's time to fix it, then folks realize how much parts are for these toys. The 2 oils I keep in stock are zrod and vr1. I use zrod in most engines unless a customer says they want to be able to buy their oil locally then I use vr1. Both have been good to me over the years

Re: Best oil???
Amsoil 4T zinc content is 1537 ppm per the email I just got from their rep. That is higher than the ZRod product, if I remember correctly.

Re: Best oil???
I run my lawnmower WOT with fish oil in the crankcase....and have better luck than I do with a mudmotor running the high end, royal zinc, high synthetic, purple weight stuff.
