‘78 Lowe 1448 with MB HDR35 build
I’ve been out of the mud boat game the last few years. Recently, I picked up a wrecked HDR. The motion base was broken in half from being rear ended. I made a jig to hold it all together- welded it back into one piece, put a new belt on and went looking for a boat!
Originally I had planned on building my own- but with moose season just around the corner I decided to find an old crappy jon boat to use in the meantime.
I first removed all the crap that came with the purchase... cut out the seats, front deck, transom, removed the rear stringer and put it between where the front seat used to be, added stringers in the back, built a heavy 20” transom (was 16”), built heavier corner braces, stiffened the gunnels with 1x2” c channel, added flush front deck, added float pods, added hand rails, added recessed light bar... wire wheeled the crap out of it, sprayed with polyurethane paint outside and green bed liner inside. Took a couple days to get it all together but I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out for a temporary rig!

I still need to add a floor, non skid coating on floor, winch, fuel tank, and wiring. I don’t get home for another 2 weeks- I’m itching to get back at this

Very nice work, but why add the pods? From the look of it you could have made a hunt deck.

Re: ‘78 Lowe 1448 with MB HDR35 build
Thanks! It was a fun project putting it all together. I’ve worked with boats for years now and the short answer for pods vs hunt deck really came down to the time I had available to put this together. It only takes me a few hours to do a set of pods and I only had a couple days total to work on this- I’ll be selling it at the end of August and building a true mud hull with a hunt deck then. I’ve built a ton of jet boats but never a mud hull- I’m really looking forward to it!

How'd the boat do with that heavy motor on there?

It did fine once I put the pods on. It runs 35mph empty with a fresh hammer prop. Handles like crap when empty. Needs weight to ride nice
